This last weekend was South Dakota Festival of the Book, held in that Wild West town, Deadwood. Although I wasn’t there officially as Lorelei James, but as a mystery writer under my “real” name, here’s some of the fun and umm…embarrassing things I did.1. Kicked over a glass of wine in the Deadwood Public Library at the author’s cocktail party. Luckily it was white wine, not red.
2. Ate a fine meal with other writer pals at Jakes’, Kevin Costner’s five-star restaurant atop the Midnight Star casino.
3. Drank beer in Saloon #10 – the infamous bar where Wild Bill Hickok was shot.
4. Participated in three massive book signings – two in Deadwood, one in Lead.
5. Got to meet Sonia Manzano, “Maria” from Sesame Street in the elevator. I refrained from doing my Cookie Monster imitation.
6. Participated in three writer’s panels – Women in Mystery, Black Hills Writers, and Sex and Violence in Mystery.
7. Made sure I used all my “free drink” tickets from The Silverado, Hickok’s, the hotel bar, The Midnight Star and The Bodega.
8. Had a lively discussion with several historical scholars and historical authors on the authenticity of the language in the HBO series DEADWOOD.
9. Enjoyed a fabulous steak dinner in a building which used to be a mortuary. Sensing some drinking and eating here?
10. Drank beer in a cigar bar in the lower level of a casino, which at one time led to the tunnels and opium dens running under the city (created by the Chinese during the gold rush) and wishing the tunnels hadn’t been closed off for safety reasons.
11. Received a t-shirt from the couple who run the Saloon #10 with the saying “I Speak French Cocksucker” imprinted on the front. (Those of you who’ve watched DEADWOOD will understand it’d make Al Swearengen proud) Yes, it is perfect to wear to the Romantic Times Conference.
12. Enjoyed the drive through Boulder Canyon with the gorgeous colors of the changing trees and the crimson vines.
13. Lastly – one thing I didn’t do all weekend? Spend a single dime on gambling. Seriously.
Any of you Thursday 13’rs ever been to Deadwood? What did you do?

I want that tee shirt! And I don’t know how you passed up the Cookie Monster opportunity. I’d be singing “C is for Cookie”…

Never been to Deadwood.
Got into all the drinking and eating you were doing though. I’d go there just for that. And the T-shirt. (Think they’d give me one?)

I want to go to Deadwood! I’ve never been, but it sounds like fun and I’ll bet my hubby would LOVE it. All I did this weekend was recover from my vacation and put my house back in some semblance of order.
In regard to your side note: What email address were you sending to? I don’t seem to be having any noticeable issues with my email, but maybe something went awry when I was doing my vacation message thing.

Sounds like a fun weekend 🙂

Yes, Charli, Amelia and Morgan, it was so cool seeing Maria and hearing her speak after all the years I watched her on Sesame Street. She must’ve been like 18 when she started in the 70’s because she still looks young.
It was a great weekend, even though I did miss my middle daughter getting first place in the high school viola division of the Rushmore Competition and my oldest daughter winning first place in the high school violin division…
My husband actually went to the Adam’s Museum – I’ve been a couple of times, for research purposes of course :0

Whoa. Do you know Dan O’Brien, by any chance? He came and did a workshop at my grad school — he’s also an alum — when I was there. And now we buy our bison from his ranch (which is, incidentally, dinner tonight. Bison, not the ranch).
The Tour Manager and I have talked about coming out to see Dan’s Ranch. Meet your meat, ya know?
As for the shirt, it’s priceless. You might want to leave it home at RT, though; I might try to steal it!

That spilling wine thing…that would be me for sure! Sounds like you had a great time. I’m gonna put this place on my list of places to visit one day 🙂

Lorelei, that sounds like great fun! Definitely more fun than I had: I had to finish an article about allusions in a comic book series for a book two of my colleagues at uni will edit.

I wrote my master’s thesis on Jesse James and Wild Bill Hickok, so I’ve always wanted to go to Deadwood. I bet that’s been more of an interest for people since the HBO series….

Sounds very cool! That would be so much fun to go to Deadwood hell it would be cool to go to the West. I haven’t even been to Michigan! Where I live in London Ontario is the furthest west I have been. Which is sad. LOL 🙂
Happy TT

I’m starstruck too, that you met Maria! And yes, she was 18 when she started on the show in 1974 (I have a Sesame Street trivia book).
Thanks for visiting my blog!

I would only be able to think about Deadwood. Could I go around saying F this and F that all the time?
Sounds like you had a great time.
Now I am curious to your “real” name.
