Thursday 13 – Thirteen Kinds of Apples

November 8, 2007

I like apples. One of the great things about fall are all the varieties of apples in the grocery store. So without further ado, here’s some that are available locally. My fave is Honeycrisp, a fairly new type developed in Minnesota in the early 1990’s so it is readily available here.
1…Honeycrisp – Complex sweet-tart flavor, juicy, super crisp yellow flesh – snacking or baking

2. Braeburn –Sweet and tangy flavor, aromatic and juicy, super crisp texture with yellow flesh – snacking or baking

Mmm. Apples. A month ago, I was listening to a bunch of the other kindergarten moms go on this whole thing about honey crisps and how they were already done here for the year and how they needed to find a supplier and …

Oh, it exhausted me just thinking about it. There are so many good varieties and really, part of what makes Honey Crisps so great is the fact that they aren’t in season long…

    Happy TT, babe!

Cool list. I had a program at the Dayjob where I had an assortment of apples cut up so people could try several different varieties, I even had a honeycrisp and a pink lady (they originated in Australia). I’ve been eating lots of galas lately.

My current favorite is Braeburns, but my sons love dipping slices of the Honeycrisps in peanut butter.

Fuji, Braeburn, MacIntosh, and Granny Smith are my faves. DH likes red delicious but I think they’re too sweet and often mushy–give me a tart apple! Pink Ladies are good, too.

I had a Granny Smith apple tree in my backyard growing up. It was my climbing tree. Wasn’t too good about producing apples. Dad threatened to cut it down one year–the tree heard and squeezed out three apples. I swear that tree had a dryad!

She got knocked down in a storm a few years ago and died. I was sad. I used to climb up higher than the roof in that tree. Sat and read many a book within its branches.

    Great list!

Wow! I never really thought about apples so much…to be honest, I don’t eat them that often…when I do I like the Red Delicious or McIntosh. There is an apple out there named after one of my ancestors (Yates), but I have never had it.

    I’m so hungry now.

Golden Delicious are my favorite followed by Granny Smith and Cameo and Honey Crisp, I’m more toward tarst than sweet which is why I like my sweet mild.

And I have to say that I ddn’t think I’d be talking about apples and comparisons today, but I’m glad I ot to do so. *grin*

    Thanks for the visit. 🙂

Yum! I made pork chops with cinnamon apples for dinner tonight — granny smith, of course, because the tart apple goes so well with a little cinnamon and brown sugar.

Now I think I may need to raid the fridge before bed…
