Thursday 13 – Good Things About Fall And School Starting

September 13, 2007

Thirteen Things about Lorelei James
Ah. September. Hot days are mostly behind us. A chill permeates the early morning air. Cool nights. And the kids go back to school~wahoo! Love my daughters, but I am used to quiet during the day and the last thing my three girls are -  is the fold-your-hands-and keep-your-mouth-shut types. Here’s are my reasons why I like the back-to-school portion of early fall.
1…I have the house to myself. No TV blaring. No music blasting. No constant foraging in the kitchen right outside my office. No fighting over the TV, the computer, the hammock or me.

2… No more “what’s for lunch” questions. When it’s just me, well, let’s just say I don’t always eat lunch. You’d think I’d be much skinnier 🙂

3…I have a love/hate relationship with school supplies. I love buying new backpacks, pens, notebooks, markers and scissors, but the lists have gotten longer every damn year. And why in the hell do I have to provide 6 dry erase markers and two boxes of Kleenex for the teachers? So I hate spending $150 on supplies.

4…Getting caught up in the girls excitement about learning. Hearing about the new classes and the cool teachers and the upcoming science experiments. It’s nice to see them enthusiastic and looking forward to certain activities.

5…Hauling their butts out of bed before 9:00 am. Petty, but I am one of those cheerful morning types and I love waking them up at 6:15 when they’ve been used to sleeping in until the crack of noon.

6…Buying school clothes. The teen girls buy most of their own clothes; my middle schooler still wants mom’s opinion. We have a fashion show every year with their new duds. Luckily we’ve dodged the whole “only name brand” portion of clothing purchases. I tell them they can have 2 pairs of $30 jeans or 1 pair of $60 jeans. Naturally more is better in their minds. Ooh, and the look on Dad’s face when he sees daughter #2 and her love of “butt crack” jeans? Priceless.

7…I love to cook in the fall. Fresh garden produce, pulling out the crock pot and pouring over soup recipes. Making cookies for after school snacks.

8…Did I mention the blessed silence from 8 am to 3:30 pm?

9…My husband can come home for lunch and we don’t have to lie about why Daddy’s home upstairs in the bedroom in the middle of the day with me 🙂

10… Returning to a schedule. Might be anal, but I like keeping track of activities. No, I don’t check them off, but I totally dig the different colored calendars on the fridge.

11… Reconnecting with other parents, and instructors after the summer hiatus.

12…For us, fall means string instrument competitions, All-State Orchestra try-outs for the high school girls, Symphony rehearsal, Suzuki group practice, music concerts, and music workshops.

13…Enjoying this last back-to-school season with my oldest. I probably won’t be so enthusiastic next year as she heads off to college.

I love fall. Cool nights and sunny days (but not too hot), it’s the perfect time of year to enjoy the outdoors. I love the fall leaves underfoot, crisp apples, fresh apple cider. My kids are too young for school, but I’m listening to the school bus and thinking…it’s only a year away. Eeek!

Your husband sneaks home for lunch? You’re so lucky!!! LOL!

I hear you on school supplies. They cost so much I get terrified I’m not going to be able to afford them all. Your days sound wonderful. I wish I didn’t have to work full time so I could enjoy that. 🙂

Cool weather, cozy sweaters, fresh air that makes me feel alive. Though the weather isn’t all that cool this year, I still get a thrill thinking Halloween is almost here, then after that Christmas.

Hey, there, Lorelei! I’ve only got one in kindergarten, but I’m already getting in an extra hour here and there. So nice to see all this progress toward a new finished book, huh?

I love fall and wish the leaves changed here, but we don’t really have fall in Florida. The kids going back to shool is definitely the most wonderful thing about fall!

Charli-she’ll be asking for the car keys before you blink.

yes, Nancy, having hubby come home for the occasional long lunch is lucky.

I admire anyone who can hold down a fulltime outside of the home job and still find time to write, Christine.

    Ack! Lisa don’t say Christmas…..

Same advice for you Susan. I remember my 17 yr old’s first day of kindergarten like it was last year.

Yeah, but Nicole, you have summer year round or close to it and are at least a couple of hours – rather than days – away from the beach.
