Thursday 13 – Colors I’m Dying To Use In A Book

September 20, 2007

1. Puce – brownish purple: purplish pink. The color sounds ugly but the word pops off the mental tongue.

2. Smalt – deep blue. Reminds me of the word schmaltzy.

3. Rubious – ruby red; rusty. Rubious lips, anyone?

4. Zinnober – chrome green. The zinnober turret absorbed the sun’s rays…sounds good, eh?

5. Niveous – snowy; white. Yay! A new description for snow.

6. Hoary – pale silver gray. Think readers would misread it as horny?

7. Haematic – blood-colored. Might work if I was writing paranormal.

8. Ibis – pale apricot color of a large stork-like bird. Mmm. To describe skin, perhaps?

9. Filemot – dull leaf color, dead brown. For grasses or leaves?

10. Gridelin – violet gray. Ooh. A new eye color!

11. Eburnean – of, or like ivory; ivory colored. Again, a skin tone.

12. Meline – canary yellow. Mmm. Might be a good heroine name.

13. Virescent – becoming green or greenish. I have to confess; I have used this one before.

What are some of your favorite colors?

Hmmm, I don’t use unusual color names too often.

That’s so weird. My TT at my group blog (Unusual Historicals) was about weird colors too! And we don’t have any overlaps.

  5. Lauren Dane said:

LOL! I love words (yep, a word whore) and this TT makes me so happy. I’m loving virescent!

    Lorelei,

This list is Awesome!!! I’m cutting and pasting and adding to my list. Some of these I’ve never even heard of. Yummy.

Ahem, if I build up the nerve to use any, I will of course credit you. 😀

  7. Debbie Mumford said:

Thanks for stopping by my TT.

Are you going to do that meme? *lol*

  8. Lorelei James said:

April – it is pronounced whorey

I know Vicki, I love scarlet, burgundy, vermilion, oxblood…

I don’t use odd colors either – I think it pulls you out of the story, but damn, I’d sure like to try it!

Ms. Dane – glad I could make you happy.

And Carrie – I was stunned to see you had the same idea, great minds, eh?

Sher, aw, you don’t have to credit me, just send me an example of how you used it!

Debbie, darlin’ resend that meme and I’ll do it on Saturday 🙂

  9. Heather said:

An interesting list. I love words so have seen some of these before.

  10. Amelia June said:

Ooh, I’m a whore for good words, and these are wonderful! But I think I’d have to define them if I used them in a novel 😉

  11. Tempest Knight said:

Cool! I just have to copy/paste these and use them next time I call my CPs. Hehehe! Thanks for sharing! Happy TT!

  12. Shelley Munro said:

Great TT. I pick plain blue 😉
Rubious sounds like someone throwing up.

  13. Denise Patrick said:

Great colors. I’ve used Puce before, but some of the others are interesting. I might have to come up with a way to use Smalt, though. I love all shades of blue!

    Thanks fir visiting my TT!

  14. Savannah Chase said:

Is it bad if I have never heard of some of them….LOL…Yah it’s bad….

Nice list, I got to learn something new

Someone else did colours like this today. How freaky is that?

  17. Nicole Austin said:

Great list! #6 would be fun to use. 😀

  18. Christine d'Abo said:

I love the word puce – ever since I heard it in Monster’s Inc. Just love it! Great list.

  19. Robin L. Rotham said:

Hmmm… Some of these sound like good colors for alien vessels, LOL! Just let me jot a few of them down…

  20. Ann said:

Isn’t Rubious Hagrid’s first name in Harry Potter? 🙂

  21. Lisa Andel said:

    Puce, hehehe. Sorry.
I kind of like the word chartreuse, but the color itself is rather hideous.

  22. Lorelei James said:

Yeah, Elle and Heather, I thought I was being original when I did this list early in the morning.

Ann~ you get a big high five for figuring that out! I *knew* that name sounded familiar. Ah. Beloved Hagrid.

I’m thinking Eburnean would be a good name for an alien race, Robin – cause it could double as skin tone.

Puce seems to be the most recognizable color since half the commentors, Lisa, Christine, Denise, Mechele have used it, what I’d like to know is *how* you guys used it.

I like using plain pink and just blue, Spy and Shelley, to keep it simple, and truthfully, sometimes it annoys me to no end to read vapid color descriptions like – sapphire or emerald or topaz colored eyes – but then, I’ll use them and that totally makes me a hypocrite 🙂

Savannah – doesn’t mean anything that you haven’t heard of these, some of them were new to me too (but not our resident word whores Amelia and Lauren :), as I was looking for another word to describe the color…brown. And Tempest, I’d like to see your cp’s reaction when they see the word niveous – tee hee –

Nicole, think we could get away with describing the color of chaps as filemot?

  23. rhian said:

holy heck! i’m an artist and many of these i hven’t even heard of! I though Niveous was a GREAT color name. i’m going to have to memorize these now!!
ps – i don’t think i’ve commented on your blog before so I probably haven’t told you that Running with the Devil was a total kickass awesome book. ummm – yeah, fangirl moment here.
    😛

  24. Lorelei James said:

Aw, Rhian, you’re making me blush. Thank you though, I’m tickled you liked the book.

As an artist, what is your favorite color?
