Teasing Tuesday…Black Heels to Tractor Wheels

February 1, 2011

About June of last year I stumbled across this blogsite The Pioneer Woman, where this former city girl named Ree Drummond blogs about her life as a wife and mother and holy crap, excellent cook (she’s also written a fantastic cookbook) on a working cattle ranch in nowhere Oklahoma. She refers to her rancher husband as Marlboro Man and she waxes poetic about his cowboy ways and how fine the man looks in a pair of Wranglers and chaps.

Hmm…

Naturally, I kept reading, and the blogsite has become my daily guilty pleasure. The Pioneer Woman has no compunction about revealing the intimate details of her kids, her family, her friends, the trials and joys of her life as the wife of a cattleman, and her tongue in cheek observations of rural country life, and her happiness of having chosen that life, even when she doesn’t want to get up at the crack of nothin’ to check cattle with her beloved.

At some point she started to post snippets of how she met her husband and the posts became popular enough she got a publication deal to turn the story about her road to “happily ever after” into a book, titled, Black Heels to Tractor Wheels, which releases today.

I’ll admit as a romance fiction writer, I’ve heard grumbling from readers–mostly non-romance readers–that the male characters I create are unrealistic. There are no ‘real’ men like that.  To which I usually…smile serenely. Or laugh. Because people, I’m telling you, the reason I’ve chosen to write about the west, cowboys and ranchers and their life on the high plains is because these types of men are real. They exist. Maybe not in your neck of the woods, but they do in mine.

So, I feel…vindicated when I read Pioneer Woman’s posts. She’s really living the life I craft for my fictional characters. Of course, she kicks that bedroom door closed, since hers is a PG site, whereas…you’ve read my X-rated erotic romance books. You know I enjoy the hell outta kicking that bedroom door wide open and getting into the down and dirty details about just how good my guys are with their hands. And ropes. And how much my females love their over-the-top alpha male goodness in the bedroom and out of it. But there is a similarity between her book and mine–they’re love stories. And I do love me some love stories. Real life and fictional.

I love the Pioneer Woman and read her blog often. Good to know I’m in great company! And yes, your men do exist. They may not be as noticeable as the ones you write about but they are there, sometimes you just have to dig a little!
