Getting Left Off The List – boo hoo

February 25, 2012

I’m aware that not everyone reads erotic romance. And writing contemporary erotic western romance puts me in a bit of a niche audience. But hey, I love the cowboy worlds I’ve created and you all seem to also…so I very happily keep doing it.

I’ll be the first to admit I don’t pay attention to best of lists and a lot of stuff online, but I’ll also admit this particular scenario surprised me. I was on a blog site which highlights books and authors for readers, by booksellers, there was a list of the 20 best or “must read” cowboy romances. So I’m scrolling through the list, nodding my head because I know and read some of these authors, some I haven’t heard of. Imagine when I get to the bottom of the list and realize that not a single one of my Lorelei James books is listed.

Not. A. Single. Book. Out of the almost 20 cowboy romances I’ve written in 2 different series, for 2 different publishers, not even ONE made the list? Really?

So I look through the list again and realize not one of these books would be considered erotic romance. Which again, I understand not everyone reads erotic romance. But erotic romance IS part of all subgenres of romance and it is popular. My sales both in digital and print support that statement, as my last three books have hit the NY Times Bestsellers list AND the USA Today Bestsellers list — wahoo!! πŸ™‚

I just found it odd, and thought I’d share with you all — since you’re my readers, to get your take on it. Here’s the link, in case you’re curious about which books did make the list:

Cowboy Romance Picks

So I’m running my own contest here on the blog — and on Facebook. Tell me your favorite EROTIC cowboy romance (and no, it doesn’t have to be one of mine because I’m not the only one who writes erotic westerns and there were a TON of really awesome erotic western authors who also didn’t make the list) or your favorite EROTIC romance and I’ll offer up signed copies of any of my backlist books to lucky, random commenters. The more comments we have the more books I’ll give away!

A big YEE-HAW to those readers who LOVE erotic romance!!!

*****just in –the FABULOUS Viv Arend, who writes freakin’ hot awesome cowboy romances herself — offered up this via twitter: I’ll toss in copies of my ER cowboys in digital, including a couple ARCs of bk 3, Rocky Mountain Desire to the contest–Erotic authors need to stick together********

My favorite is Raising Kane. Your books are the oly Erotic Cowboy books I have read. I kinda fell into them by accident. But I have loved everyone of them. It’s nice to sit back and read something is so truly romantic but sexy too. My husband really likes me reading them too and he will be excited there is more to come. I just wish the book would come out faster than just on e-books. For those of us who don’t have anything to download them on. I can really imagine life as you put it with the MaKays and it brings a little spark to my marriage. Keep them coming and I love it.

I love the whole series but I think my altime favorite has to be Long Hard Ride. Bought it shortly after visiting with you in Deadwood a couple years ago. Started a whole new reading adventure for me.

  3. Tara said:

Wrangled and tangled was steamy but I will admit I am waiting for the one coming out in August. I love erotic books but some people consider them taboo so they think they don’t belong in the same category as best sellers.

  4. Jackie Allen said:

Rough Raw and Ready is my absolute favorite.

  5. Shilla said:

How do I pick just ONE?
Okay, okay. “One” of my very favorites was “Rough Raw and Ready”… I loved loved loved the story of Edgard! I want moreeeeee of their story!!!

  6. Sophie E. said:

Well, your books are my favorite books just in general – romance, cowboy, erotic – doesn’t matter, they’re my favorites, which makes choosing 1 kinda hard. But I think Wrangled and Tangled was my all time favorite. It touched me even more than all the rest. A close 2nd is Raising Kane, which I have re-read a bazillion times πŸ™‚ Your books makes it a whole lot more interesting living vicariously πŸ˜‰

  7. Renee Benge said:

My ALL time favorite is your Rough Rider series..hands down the best series ever…but I also love Linda Lael Miller’s McKettrick series…any Diana Palmer…and Sandra Brown’s Texas Trilogy is why I love Cowboy romance…

  8. Joanne said:

I’m surprised by the Diana Palmer book. I’ve read some of her books because she has a ton out there and I think they sell well. I thought they weren’t very good so I’d pick up another thinking I just selected a ‘miss’. But it was still the same, I just didn’t like them – the conversations are stilted and the sex is badly written. To me, it’s similar to a an old Harlequin. I just don’t get her stuff. I’d rather read anything by you than something by her.

  9. Elyse Snow said:

My favorite: ROUGH RAW AND READY. Although I also loved COWGIRL UP AND RIDE.

  10. Danielle West said:

Truly and honestly, the ONLY cowboys I read about, erotic or not, are by Lorelie James πŸ™‚ I love them! And the review sites that I follow review and love them too and that’s how I got introduced to your books. You rock!

  11. Kym Barry said:

Rode Hard & Put Up Wet was my fave book of yours Lorelei – but my all time fave is Caine’s Reckoning – Sarah McCarty – i love Cowboy erotic romances and for me you and Sarah McCarty are on a par

  12. Heather said:

What I hate about that list, is that it has authors that write the same story EVERY TIME!!!!!!!!! It truly gets on my nerves! Linda Lael Miller and Diana Palmer are the worst offenders & I think Lori Foster is getting there too. These are all also by the same 4 or 5 authors. Give some diversity! There’s Indie published cowboy romances that I like better than some of these.

    My favorite? Strong, Silent, Type!

  13. Cindy Overton said:

I dont believe in stroking ego’s so with what I am about to say – Know its from the heart.

    1. Rough Riders (all of them) is my favorite cowboy series with Blacktop right behind.
    2. Sarah McCarty – every book in the Hell’s 8 and Promises series
    3. Delilah Devlin – all her cowboy romances
    4. Desiree Holt – all her cowboy romances
    5. Cat Johnson- all her cowboy romances (and Military)
    6. Maggie Shayne and Linda Howards – older western books
    7. Starla Kaye and Carolyn Faulkers – westerns

  14. DiDi said:

My favorite are all of yours….If I HAVE to pick a favorite from each series it would be Cowgirl Up and Ride and Saddled and Spurred. The other erotic cowboy romance series I absolutely love is Vivian Arend’s Rocky Mountain series.

Your books belong at the top of that list, yes there are some big names on there, but honestly, some of their books are interchangeable, you can change the H/h’s name and the plots are the same. YOUR books are NEVER like that.

Don’t worry about the B&N list, you stay on the Amazon list and AMAZON rocks!!!

  15. Kelly said:

I looked at the link, and I have honestly only read two of the authors on the list, but the Lori Foster books I have read, well, they are pretty vanilla. That is the only reason I can think of as to why you were left off the list – maybe this list was geared for more straight romance than real erotic romance.

Long Hard Ride is my all time favorite – I have read them all but the first is still my fav

I also like Heather Rainier’s series Divine Creek Ranch

  16. Casey Lu said:

Ohh my how do I choose only one? I mean that’s my problem with your books, but if I have to choose based on fav cowboy book it has to be Cowgirl up and Ride. I love that they are both into horses, and AJ can handle them just as good as Cord!! I love him teaching her about sex. There is just so much to love about that book!! In the non-erotic category I have to say I love the McKettrick series by Linda Leal Miller.

  17. Mary Hoffman said:

Tied Up Tied Down was my favorite. Rough Raw and Ready is my second favorite. I do love the whole series but those are my favorites. I also think you are the best author in your genre.

  18. Diana said:

I found your books when my broke self was browsing Barnes & noble’s for free books and came across “Long Hard Ride” and “Slow Ride” but I was say that my absolute favorite would be “Branded as Trouble.” Colt and Indy get me choked up every time I read it, a very close second is Rough, Raw and Ready (steamy is all I gotta say).

  19. Jennifer said:

My absolute favorite is cowgirl up and ride. I must have read that book at least 15 times. When I’m in between books coming out its my go to book. Also Love saddled & spurred. That is one hot book but it also makes me laugh! My other
favorite writer is Linda Lael miller with the Mcketrrick series. I honestly haven’t found any other series in the genre that I like but would love some suggestions! πŸ™‚

  20. Barbara said:

Tied up, Tied Down Loved this book. I have read all your books. Love them. Can’t wait for the next one.

  21. LauraL said:

You are definitely number 1 in my book. I read cowboy romances from various authors but none compare to yours. I eagerly await every book you write. I love all the Rough Riders book and can’t wait for the new Blacktop Cowboys book. The McKays are the tops. It’s so hard to pick a favorite. I loved them all so much but I would say Rough, Raw and Ready tops the list followed closely by Branded as Trouble. Thanks for sharing those cowboy worlds with the rest of us.

  22. Aimee said:

Pure craziness that you are not on that list! I love, love, love all your books! My absolute favorite is “Long Hard Ride” with “Cowgirl Up and Ride” and “Saddled and Spurred” tied for second.

  23. Renee S said:

Ok, I have to say first, I bounce sub genres,so I blushingly admit I haven’t read all of ur books, but! Several!! I love each one differently… One of my faves is long hard ride. =) its so hard to pick just one!

Well, your books are first in fav Erotic romance books. But, I also enjoy Natalie Acres stories. And then of course, there’s Lora Leigh’s August Series.

  26. Charlotte said:

You definitely started my Cowboy addiction!
    1. Lorelei James – Love the Rough Riders – fav from that one is Cowgirls Don’t Cry & the Blacktop Series – fav from that on is Saddled and Spurred

    2. Carolyn Brown – Lucky Series

  27. Marsha A said:

Obviously I love the Rough Rider Series. But I also love the Hells Eight and Promises Series by Sarah McCarty.

  28. Nicole said:

Without a doubt, Chasin’ Eight was my favorite. I love all the Rough Riders books but the slowness of the relationship between Chase and Ava and how they were friends first was what did it for me! Please don’t stop writing, this series is fabulous.

  29. mariann said:

That is such a tough one. I have so many but my favorites have to be rough riders series especially cord and aj book. Sophie oak , heather rainier ,Lauren dane and maya banks.
I love all of your books and can’t understand why u didn’t make the list.:(:(

For me it is quiet, silent type. Quinn and Libby jus

  31. Stephanie said:

My favorite RR series book- Cowgirl Up and Ride, Blacktop Cowboys favorite- Saddled and Spurred. I was surprised at the amount of books on the list that had the same authors. I do love Jodi Thomas, I have read all her books that are available in ebook format and some that are paperback. There are three authors on the list I have read but not the actual book(s) on the list. By the reviews listed on purchasing sites, I am a little surprise that the Compass Brothers series and the Studs and Spurs series was not listed. I am curious as to how they went about selecting these ?

  32. Katie Dee said:

Okay, after looking over the list there are a few authors listed that I have read, however, I don’t really think they qualify for erotic or even semi-erotic romance. The genre they represent is more tame almost PG-rated rather than R-rated. Personally, I much prefer a romance that has an “erotic” element , and more importantly a GREAT story. Without a good storyline it’s just a bunch of sex scenes but when you combine the two, well, it is a home run.
I discovered your books by accident, when I first got my Nook, and have been hooked ever since. I love ALL your writing, but All Jacked Up, Tied Up and Tied Down, Saddled and Spurred and Strong Silent Type are my go back to books.
Other authors I associate as writers of erotic romance and enjoy their books are Jaci Burton, Sarah McCarty, Lora Leigh, Cat Johnson and Beth Kery.

  33. Diane M said:

The best romance are all erotic in my opinion. My favorite cowboys are all in the Rough Riders series, I can’t choose just one, with the Compass Brother’s as a close second. My favorite erotic books all have cowboys.

  34. Tami said:

By far, you are at the top of the list for my favorite cowboy author. My favorite of yours is Rough, Raw, and Ready. Their story is so raw and emotional. I also enjoyed ‘The Broken H’ by J. L. Langley. Keep writing what you love, as we love to read them!

  35. Shannon bigelow said:

I recently started reading your work. I started with chasing eight. I read it and became immediately hooked…..and I am the type who loves reading series. So needless to say I started reading them from book one to the last one you have published and thus far I have loved them all!!!! I love all the characters and look forward to new releases. So I have no absolute favorite because all your books are amazing. Keep up the fantastic work and I will definitely keep reading!!! Thank you for your hard work πŸ™‚

  36. Kimberly said:

Sorry I can’t pick one I loved the ENTIRE Rough Riders Series and am waiting for the next one (and next one, and next one, and next one…)
Appreciate the other posts on some authors I will look into, but the only author I enjoyed on the B&N list is Lori Foster.

  37. lyndsey said:

cowgirl up and ride. i am embarrassed to admit I’ve probably read it ten times and plan to keep re-reading it.

  38. Cassie said:

I love all of the Rough riders but my favorite has to be Rough, Raw and Ready.

  39. angela said:

I honestly have to say your books are my favorite books just cowboy, erotic and are the only ones i have read.. My fave are the Rough Riders, Out of them all my fav would have to be Branded as Trouble πŸ™‚

  40. Sharon said:

You are my favorite!! I love all your books, and out of the RR series the ones that I go back and re-read time and time again are: Cowgirl Up and Ride, Raising Kane, Cowgirls Don’t Cry and Cowboy Casanova. Two other authors I enjoy are Sophie Oak’s Bliss, CO series and Leah Brooke’s Desire, OK series.

  41. Liz Martin said:

I have three picks. First, of course is your book Cowgirl Up and Ride. Love AJ and Cord. Second, Cat Johnson’s book Hooked. Love the characters Annie and Luke. And finally Vivian Arend’s Rocky Mountain Heat. Love Blake and Jaxi. I love all the Coleman boys. All three of these are in a series and can’t wait for the next books to come out.

  42. Helen said:

My very favorite is still Cowgirl Up and Ride. I won a paperback copy a couple of years ago and treasure it since it was signed by Lorelei herself. I reread parts of it from time to time, especially the bachlorette party scene which never fails to leave me laughing.

  43. Amanda Olten said:

I love your books! I’ve read and re-read the rough riders series more than I care to tell people about. My favorites (cause I can’t just pick one) is “Cowgirl up and Ride” “Raising Kane” and “should have been a cowboy”. I have so many favorite authors. You of course, Heather Rainier, kresley cole, Lauren Dane (I love the chase brothers!)…there are so many! I love what you do, please don’t stop!

  44. Cammie said:

I LOVE all your cowboys! Hard to pick a favorite but the titles I re-read the most are Raising Kane, Shoulda Been a Cowboy, and Saddled and Spurred. Wait, I LOVED Cowboy Cassanova too. It just gets better and better with each new book! Thanks for keeping it exciting and fresh! I recently just found Sophie Oak and am really enjoying her CO and TX storylines.

  45. Julie said:

There is no way I can pick a favorite in the Rough Riders series, I love them all! You have completely drawn readers into the characters lives and we all can’t wait to read more about the McKays! You rock!

  46. Rachel Roach said:

I’ve only read the Blacktop Cowbyoys series. I like Wrangled and Tangles the best, makes me think of all the Labor day weekends in Palestine IL at the Rodeo…good times!

  47. Teresa Wilson said:

I have read everything I can find that you have written no matter the genre. I don’t look at the Rough Rider series as multiple books, I see it as one big book doled out over time. That means my answer for favorite is the ” mutli volumed Rough Rider” Thanks for keeping me entertained. You are awesome.

  48. Kelly said:

While I LOVE all of your books, one of my all time favorites is All Jacked Up. Not only alpha male but strong female. Love it!!!!

  49. Kaylyn Davis said:

I think my favorite is Cowgirl Up and Ride. I love AJ and Cord! Also I like The Compass Brother series by Mari Carr and Jayne Rylon, those are kinda cowboys.
I can’t believe you didn’t make that list, your books are some of the best I have ever read not just in the cowboy genre.

  50. Nikki Snider said:

I never wanted to read cowboy books until I was convinced to give it a try and read some of yours! Like someone else said, I am not stroking your ego but I truly love the Rough Riders series! My favorite in the series is Branded as Trouble! Man, Colt drives me crazy, I love him!!!

  51. Stephanie said:

Rough Raw and Ready is beyond my favorite!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read and re-read that book! In fact, it was that book that got me into other books within the same nature! So I have to thank you for writing amazing books! You’ve included two of my favorite subjects within books, Cowboys and Sex! I mean how many girls can honestly say that they don’t dream about Hot Cowboys and you take those dreams for us and make them real!!

  52. Larri Servin said:

I don’t really read very many cowboy books. I haven’t read a single book on that list. I really like your books, whether they are about cowboys, private investigators or anything else. I guess I just really like the way you write:) You already know I’m a big fan of Julie and Martinez (and Kevin and Jimmer…), but my favorite RR book is “Raising Kane”. A gorgeous, hard-working man who is great in bed, cooks, cleans and takes care of kids? Sounds pretty damn perfect to me.

  53. Julie said:

My favorite is Long Hard Ride. This was the first book I read of yours and it has made me a fan. My husband even reads your books. I also love your story about Cam McKay. My husband is an iraqi war veteran so I can relate to this story.

  54. Amanda Olten said:

I forgot to mention the strong silent type! I know it’s shorter than the others but I love that Quinn and Libby find love again. Now you’ve got me thinking about your books so I guess I’ll re-read them again… Btw I’ve only read none of the authors on that list so I can’t say anything about them. I can say that your on the top of my favorites though!

  55. Janelle said:

Long Hard Ride was the first book I read that got me hooked on Cowboys πŸ˜‰ Other authors I have read include (in no particular order): Cara North (Country Music Collection) Anne Marie Novak (Diamond Back Ranch collection) Beth Williamson (Devils on Horseback collection) Heather Rainer (Divine Creek collection) and Sophie Oak (Texas Siren collection) Carloyn Brown (Lucky series).

  56. Sarah E. said:

Saddled and Spurred is my favorite cowboy romance, actually my favorite romance period. Love Bran and Harper’s relationship. Thank you for all of your awesome books!

  57. McKinney Girl said:

It just baffles me that Diana Palmer always makes these lists. To be fair, I do really like her novel “The Cowboy and the Lady.” However, it is very very “goody goody” and parts of it make me laugh out loud. I do not know any cowboys that think or talk the way Jace, the main character, does in this novel. It is really hard to pick a favorite out of your books, Lorelei, but if I had to choose I would say “Saddled and Spurred.” Bran is such a vulnerable character, and that to me is what makes him so strong. He is intimidated by Harper because she is so pretty and he feels unworthy of her. It is good to see an author present a male lead who is not the perfectly good looking stud. Not that I don’t think Bran is hot as hell. And I certainly do enjoy all those McKay hotties!

  58. Renee M said:

Hands down YOU are at the top of my list (not a suck up, just a fact). Picking a favorite RR or BTC would be like picking a favorite ice cream–ain’t gonna happen cuz I love them all. I guess I would have to put Cowgirl Up and Ride (ahh, Cord) at the top.
I have read a few of the authors who made their (pathetically shallow) list but they don’t compair to you and your McKay men.

  59. cheryl robeson said:

My absolute favorite erotic romance book is Strong Silent Type. It is so rare to find stories about couples who have been together for along time rediscovering the love and passion they have for each other. It reminded me of how important it is to work on my marriage every day. My husband and I both want to thank you for that.

  60. Laura Bowles said:

I have so many favourite Cowboy Erotic Romance authors that I could never pick a specific title so I will list my authors. Stacy Espino, Cat Johnson, Morgan Ashbury, Lorelei James, Delilah Devlin, Sarah McCarthy just to name a few. I finding new ones all the time. I have some that I have ordered that I haven’t read yet, but I’m working on it.

  61. Chris Alexander said:

I really like your books, but I haven’t found one that I *have* to go back and reread. Of course, I’m not through the RR series, yet and haven’t started any others. I do love Lora Leigh’s Nauti series. My favorites are “Nauti Nights” with Dawg and “Nauti Intentions” with Alex. Just something about those boys. I’m actually just wading into the erotic end of the pool, but am thoroughly enjoying myself. :o) Thanks for all the hard work.

  62. Laura Bowles said:

I probably should have looked at the list first. I have read Lori Fosters Buckhorn series. the list has Buckhorn Forever but that is book 3 and 4 of a 5 book series. Book 1 and 2 is Buckhorn Beginnings. They are not erotic in the traditional sense but there is some hot love scenes. I really enjoyed this series from Lori Foster and I can say that the way she ended Buckhorn Forever was a cliffhanger to rival “who shot JR” and I have to wait until summer to find out what happens next. I would recommend the Buckhorn series to any cowboy romance fan.

  63. Rachel S said:

favorite book- “Cowgirl Up and Ride”

I am a huge reader, I read everything romance, erotic romance, romantic history… the list goes on. The difference between your serieses and a lot of authors out there is when you read your books you can live it with the characters. You dont catch yourself saying that is not how life is, case in point how you write about sex. Sex is not just missionary. And just cause you can write sex better than most doesn’t mean you should be left out of these lists. Those people making those lists obviously can only do vanilla!!! lol ALL your books rock!!!

  64. ARK said:

Hmmm… I love a good cowboy menage, so it’s a toss up between Rough, Raw, and Ready, and Jenny Penn’s Kansas Heat… I think I’ve reread RR&R more times because I love the m/m parts and you don’t get that with Ms. Penn:)

  65. Connie said:

Ok your books are my all time favorite when it comes to Cowboy romance books. With that being said I will also say that I love Viv’s Six Pack Ranch books (Rocky Mountain Heat is favorite of that so far but can’t wait for the next book), Cat Johnson, Delilah Devlin, Sarah McCarty, and Desiree Holt (although hers can be hit or miss). I love your books because you actually know what it means to live out in a rural area. I hate when authors do not do research, I read a book recently that was set in Kansas and she had a character make a comment about how the snow set over the Rockies look. I just started laughing so hard that I could not quite because you can not even see the Rockies from Kansas.

  66. Ursula Garcia said:

I don’t even need to look at the list, yours are my favorite. My daughter is the one who got me hooked on your books. I wasn’t really into cowboy stories but I like contemporary so I thought I’d give it a try. “Strong Silent Type” was my first and I haven’t looked back. “Saddled and Spurred” is my all time favorite. I’m widowed with two kids and a caretaker of my mom so I can relate to being the responsible one. Your books help me escape at least for a little while.

  67. Sabrina said:

I’ve read a couple of the authors on that list, the books were good but not fulfilling. I like reading all the elements in a book, not just hinting. My husband asked what the difference was between erotica and the other romance books I read is, I simply told him erotica is a rated R movie, and the other books are rated PG. For me, I get a better whole story with erotica.
Sarah McCarty, Vivian Arend, and you are my go to authors for my cowboy fix. “Saddled and Spurred” is my fav though, I can’t get enough of the fainting goats!

  68. Bobbie said:

Cowgirls Don’t Cry is one of my favs. Again, not a suck up! But I love most erotic cowboy romances. Enjoy Viv Arend and others mentioned above Always look for a good cowboy story when I am searching. Keep writing. Your books are ones I wait for and pre order!

  69. Janet B said:

The list surprised me. I didn’t think ‘cowboy’ with Lori Foster’s Buckthorn books, although they were very enjoyable. I found that I have Linda Lael Miller’s “McKettrick’s Luck”, so I’ll take another look at it. My favorite book is Lorelei’s “Cowgirl Up and Ride”!

  70. Sharon said:

    Lorelei,
You know how much I love you and your books and I will admit I have read some of the books on their list BUT they don’t even compare to your series, especially the Rough Riders series. Obviously someone hasn’t really done their homework. The books on their list are more “mainstream”, they aren’t bad but they are far from your stories or those of Cat Johnson, Viv Arend, Leah Bramel, or Maya Banks. I love Lori Foster’s Buckhorn series which on was on the list but honestly while that series is good, it is FAR from your works. Same goes for Carolyn Brown, I like her stuff but it’s not yours or the other fabulous ladies I’ve mentioned. Now, I will say their books are more mainstream and while they contain some good lovin’, they aren’t in your stratosphere at all. That being said, my favorite all time EROTIC romance has to be…..drumroll……Tied Up, Tied Down. While I love the entire series for some reason I have a big old soft spot for Kade McKay that just won’t go away. I love that man! I will tell you that after Chasin’ Eight, Chase gives him a run for the money but in my book Kade will always be the perfect cowboy!! Lorelei, please don’t worry about these silly lists. You are awesome, we all know it and while I’m at it I’ll just put in another plea for you to please, please, please consider moving the series forward with the kids’ stories after you finish up the Wild West bunch because I really want Ramona, Chet, and Remy’s stories! But I also so want to see how the current McKay men handle their children getting older! Love you Lorelei and have a super rest of the weekend!

  71. Rebecca said:

No matter how many Rough Riders you write, I will always love Long Hard Ride the most because it started it all. I still remember what I was doing the day I read it. And I tell everyone who wants to “try” western romance to start there.

  72. ClaudiaGC said:

Cowfirl Up and Ride is one of my favourite Cowboy books. I haven’t read a lot of Cowboy books but yours and Kaki Warner’s are my absolute favourites. I just realized that I like the real smutty ones and the quite tame ones best. πŸ˜€
Thank you for this impromptu giveaway!

I have a huge appetite for books! I am a black woman who absolutely loves your books! There is so much I can say, but I’d rather get to the point. My favorite Rough Riders titles are Long Hard Ride (Channing and Colby’s story…I re-read it at least once a year)…followed by Rough, Raw, and Ready (read it 3x)…. and Branded as Trouble. I always wait on the edge of my seat for your next book! (Kissin’ Tell…just sayin’). Other erotic authors I’ve read include Sarah McCarty(Mac’s Law and the Hell’s Eight series) and Mackenzie McKade. Thank you for giving me “little escapes” when I need them…for only $15.00.

Yes, I love to read my kink but the stories/writing are what keep me coming back for more, and my hubby isn’t complaining either. Have not read Vivian’s yet, but I’d love to!
    Love you L!!

It’s hard to pick one cowboy erotica romance that I like. I like all of yours, I like Cat Johnson’s books, I like Leah Brooke’s books, I like Sophie Oak’s books, I like Morgan Ashbury’s (+ Cara Covington) books, Desiree Holt’s cowboy books, and I’m pretty sure some others that I can’t think of right at this moment. However, I have not read any of those authors on the list. This sounds something like what Paypal is doing to certain publishers by telling them they won’t participate if they have independent authors. Look at Cat Johnson’s and Kallypso Master’s pages and feel your blood pressure rise. Because they write erotica, some publishers are pulling their books. This is simply censorship, and while this list is a more subtle form of censorship, based on “recommended” it is still censorship. Amazon has tried stuff like this before and they have had to back down due to public outcry, so keep fighting the good fight! I’m with you.

I love cowboy romances and have read quite a few and found it odd that you were not mentioned on that list, which I left a comment on that site along those lines. While I love most of the cowboys romances the RR & BTC are still my favs and Raising Kane is my all time favourite and have read 5 times now :-).

Erotic contemporary: Ò??DirtyÒ? by Megan Hart
Erotic BDSM: Ò??Sweet PersuasionÒ? by Maya Banks

Well, I love Elizabeth Lowell and I think LuAnn McLane is fabulous too. Linda Lael Miller always writes a god book, too. But, you write the BESt erotic cowboy romance around! Bar none. My particular favorite is the first of yours I got a few years ago at the Get-Together, autographed and all, by you in your red cowgirl boots…”Rode Hard, Put Up Wet”. Loved it and all the rest of those cowboy bad boys! Keep them coming!

Long Hard Ride!! That has to be my FAVORITE!! It was like meeting my best friends family for the first time. Ya know, when you get to be around all the time but just kinda sit back and watch everything happen. I met a great family and wanted to know more. Thank goodness that you let us get to know them all better… much better πŸ˜‰ Lorelei you have a special talent for making us care about your characters as much as you do!! Viv’s Rocky Mountain Heat was a great introduction to another wild and crazy family!! THANK YOU both so much!

My favorite’s are Rough, Raw and Ready and Branded as Trouble. I haven’t not liked any of them. You are great. I first ready you in an A Wild Ride, that I bought for my friends story Buckling Down which I also love. I read Strong Silent Type, then I had to go get all the other ones for my kindle.

I’ve read and enjoyed all of your books, and I couldn’t begin to pick just one as a favorite. Depends on my mood, for one thing. We seem to be in a period in which a very vocal minority representing extremely repressive moral/religious views is exercising whatever muscle it can muster. This country is a whole lot bigger than that, and I can’t see this American Taliban flourishing when it is in such opposition to the majority of people who believe in free speech and free will. Because of huge amounts of money behind them, they are managing to have their day, but I believe in the ingenuity of free and thinking Americans to survive this assault on our choices, and to come out of this period stronger and with more resources than before.

I can’t believe that LJ was not mentioned! I’m seriously addicted to the RR series, for reals. So much so that I’ve neglected many other books to reread the series. I love so many of the books, but my absolute favorite book has to be Rough Raw & Ready. Love. It. I’m definitely gonna check out this Viv Arend lady though. Anyone whose got LJ’s back is worth reading.

  86. Jenn B said:

My favorite erotic authors are you and Lora Leigh. I’ve read many of the books on that list and am actually surprised by one of them being on there. Joanne Kennedy is a must buy for me. Carolyn Brown, Linda Lael Miller, and Dianna Palmer are ones I buy but there is some lack of consistency in quality between books. I have not read Lori Foster’s cowboy romances but I might need to look in to them.

  87. Eileen said:

I’m shocked that you weren’t on the list and I would be pissed. You’re right about the list not having one erotic story on it.
I would pick Cowgirl Up and Ride as my all time favorite erotic western. I’ve been reading Sarah McCarty’s Hell’s Eight and Mari Carr/Jane Rylon Compass Brothers which are also really good. The Blacktop Cowboys series is also one of my favorites.

  88. Lillie S. said:

I love all of your books, but Tied Up, Tied Down is my favorite cowboy book. I am so surprised that your books didnt make the list but I hope you Keep writing so I can keep reading them.

Boy all I gotta ask is “does this Jules Herbert have a bigger checking account now because of this list”!! And who in the hell let a guy pick this list anyway!! I have to admit I read 3 of the authors but geez its over the top when so many of the same author is on the same list. Love the RR series!!!!!

  91. Kellie said:

Well you are my number 1 but I do love Beth Williamsom Malloy Family. The honor and love that are part of these 2 series is what I lookfor not to mention the hot sheet action Lol.

If I had to pick an erotic series that isn’t Rough Riders my vote goes to Cat Johnson’s Studs in Spurs. There’s just something about bull riders and the women that love them! Also I just downloaded Mari Carr/ Jayne Rylon’s Compass Brothers and fell in love with those boys. Vivian Arend’s Granite Lake Wolves and Six Pack Ranch series are also top notch! But for sure whenever I tell anyone about a good cowboy book, I’ll always suggest Tied Up, Tied Down or Branded For Trouble!

I ? the Rough Riders Series! I always feel like I am in REAL COWBOY lives and loves when I am reading them. I have a hard time picking which one I like the best… but if I had to “Cowgirl Up and Ride” and “Branded As Trouble” stole my heart first.
Thank you Lorelei for the great cowboy stories.

  95. Michelle Rossi said:

I have way too many favorites to just narrow them down, especially yours, LJ. “Cowgirls Up & Ride, Branded as Trouble, Shoulda Been a Cowboy, All Jacked Up, Wrangled & Tangled: A Blacktop Cowboy, & Miss Firecracker: Wild West Boys, #2.”

Maya Banks —>”Sweet Seduction, Colters’ Woman, & Brazen.” Delilah Devlin—>”Four Sworn: Lone Star Lovers #3.” Vivian Arend—>”Rocky Mountain Heat: Six Pack Ranch #1.”

  96. Kathryn Barnum said:

I’ve read a fair number of erotic cowboy romances. Reading Sarah McCarty’s Hell’s Eight led me to your books, Lorelei, which then led me to others such as those by Maya Banks and Delilah Devlin. It’s now one of my favorite genres–I’m always looking for a good, erotic cowboy romance!

I grew up surrounded by cowboys in Oklahoma. I live in the Pacific Northwest now. I have to get my cowboy fix through books. I love Vivian Arend’s Six Pack Ranch books. I also love Sarah McCarty’s cowboys as well as the Jayne Rylan/Mari Carr books. I’m half way through your Roughriders series and can’t wait to read the rest.

  98. EJ said:

Well, I will say upfront that I read three of the authors on that list; Lori Foster, Linda Leal Miller, and Diana Palmer, and I love their books. But, I love your books as well. The way I see it; it’s like different types of chocolate; do I want white chocolate(mild romance), milk chocolate(just a little spice romance), or do I want dark chocolate(erotic romance). I love all three; the chocolate and the romance. To me a romance is a romance no matter the spice, and to leave off erotic romance is just wrong. I have to say some of my favorite erotic romance stories would be: “STRONG SILENT TYPE” because that really struck a cord with me, me and my husband have been married for 23 years and have been together since we where teenagers just like Libby and Quinn. Its not an easy road to follow, but man the rewards ahhh… oh sorry back to favorite books: “SWEET POSSESSION” BY MAYA BANKS I love the way Maya did not just follow in the footsteps of the stories before in the Sweet series but told it just the way it happened in its own way; “ROUGH, RAW AND READY” I love the way you made me think it would be possible for this to work, when I first started reading it I did not think I would like it that there is no way its possible, by the time I got to the end of the book I was in love with them all myself, and now give other books that are outside the box a try; “COLTER’S WOMAN” BY MAYA BANKS this was other that I thought I would not like but by the end I could not wait for the next book. These are the books that started me reading erotic romance and now when I want dark chocolate aka erotic romance this is where I look.

Lorelei, I am not sure if you read the comments listed on the other site but a lot of people ask the same question that you did “Where is Lorelei James?”. Thought you might like to hear that your fans were looking for you as well.

  99. Jen said:

Picking my fav RR is like asking me to pick my fav niece or nephew. Since starting to reading LJ and others erotic authors, when I go back and read “regular” romance it makes my teeth hurt. “Regular” romance novels are just to sweet, nice, and the characters are so fake I am screaming by the second chapter. I would mention Cheyenne McCray has a modern western/cop/erotic series out. There are other erotic authors that I read, but nobody writes a cowboy romance like Ms. Lorelei. Thanks for mentioning Viv Arend I will check her books.

  100. Nicole Bush said:

I think I’ve read just about everything you’ve written. Whether as Lorelei or Lori. As far as Cowboys and erotica, Rough Riders was my first. When I can’t decide what I want to read next, I go back and read them again. It’s a good thing their on my Nook, otherwise they’d fall apart. It’s hard to decide which McKay is my favorite…Cord? Colt? Kade? Otherwise, the only other Cowboy erotica I’ve read would be the Hell’s Eight Series by Sarah McCarty.

  101. Barb in Indy said:

I am late to the party but I gonna add my thoughts. Just because a publisher puts a cowboy hat and boots on the cover male does not make it a book with cowboys. I like a little more from my writers. I like your RR series the best and parts of your books have stayed with me for a long time. Today though I would say Chasing 8 is my fave. It will change tomorrow because I do love Colt & India and Keely- I want to be Keely’s friend.
As far as B&N goes- irriating that since romance is made up of a vast majority of female buyers that the list was composed by a man. I won’t even go into maybe a male is afraid of erotica for his own problmes.
Oh well less money for B&N because I won’t be spending any money there.

  102. Dawn Sumner said:

Ok so I read alot of erotic romance stories you Lorelei James are by far one of my best. My favorites are Branded as Trouble and Raising Kane. But I do read others too so here goes Lori Foster, Buckhorn series. Sarah McCarty Mac’s Law and the Hell’s Eight series. Lora Leigh’s Nauti series. But I do like all the McKay men OUCH!!!!!!

  103. Bianca said:

No offence to the other authors, I’m sure they worked hard to write their story and be published. But it’s like comparing apples with oranges, and obviously we like our oranges with a side of alpha male and whips. Picking just one story is hard, I’d have to go with Long Hard Ride, because it opened the door to erotic romance. A door that will never be shut!!

  104. Sherri Hardegree said:

Hard to believe they left you off that list! My favorite is All Jacked Up. Such a great romance with a tough but tender heroine.

  105. Timitra said:

Hands down Cowgirl Up and Ride, I love me some Cord McKay!!!!!!! Favourite erotic romance is Personal Assets by Emma Holly, it was the first erotic book I ever read!!! After reading it I went in search of others like it and the rest as they say is history, I’ve been reading erotic ever since!!!

  106. Pippi S said:

I’m sorry but I just have one word for the fool that left you off that list, F*$Ktard! How could it be that one of the hottest writers around be forgotten? It’s all good. People will go into the stores looking for those others titles, look at the books, think ‘meh’ and put them down. Then they’ll notice your books and walk out with several titles. Just like I did last year when I was there! My all time fav is ‘Branded as Trouble’. Their story hits very close to my own. Keep up the amazing writing L, you’ll always be number 1 on my list!

Some readers are a bit more fanatical in voting and, I’m going to imagine, some of these lists are created by “friends” of some authors (this is my humble opinion). Yes, erotica/romantica is treated shabbily and it pisses me off, I love it and buy it big time. Your books are terrific and the fact that they have been so successful speaks volumes. Of yours, Cowgirl up and Ride I just love it. Also love Nowhere ranch and Quick to the Hunt – both M/M, both country themes. Cheers.

Rough, Raw and Ready is one of my favorites, it has all the the things i like to read about m/f/m +m/m but all in a loving relationship. Some of my cowboy erotic romance must reads:
Lorelei James (of course!) – My favorites are Raisin’ Kane, Cowgirl Up and Ride, and All Jacked Up
    Sarah McCarty’s Hell’s Eight Series
    Vivian Arend’s Rocky Mountain Series
Bella Andre also writes some wonderful contemporary erotic romances (not usually about my favorite cowboys, but still sexy!)

  116. Cindy B said:

OMG! Lorelie, I feel like I’ve read all the best erotic romance around and it turns out all of your books are at the top of my list! The best has to be Cowboy Cassanova, followed very closely by Cowgirl Up & Ride, Rasing Kane, and All Jacked Up. I mean, I LOVE ALL YOUR BOOKS! Cowboy Cassanova brought tears to my eyes at the end. I can’t believe your books weren’t on that list! You’re the best! Please keep on writing! The McKays need you!

  117. Jocelyn Johnson said:

OMG! I can’t pick just one! I couldn’t make it without my Erotica Romances to read! I Love all of your Rough Rider Series and it would be tough to choose a favorite. I have also read Vivian Arend and I love McKenzie McKade too! Cowboys and Eroticia Yum!

Just saw the list… I am very surprised given the fact that your books have hit the Bestseller lists more than once. It is very obvious you know what you are doing and have a large fan base.
I have often wondered about these “best of”lists. My husband complains that the car magazines he reads only chooses the cars that have put money into that magazine. The magazines only chose the ones that make the manufacturers happy. This list makes me wonder if B&N are choosing the books that make the publishers happy. This is not to discount the authors, some of them I have heard of and they are wonderful.
Having said that…. I have 2 favorite authors and series. The first is you, Lorelei. The first book in the RR series, Long Hard Ride, was my introduction into the Erotic Romance genre. I have a place in my heart for you and the McKay men. My second is Mari Carr. I love her Compass brothers series and am eagerly awaiting her 4th in the series.
Thanks for this great forum for me to get on my soap box. I will always go to bat for Lorelei. You are one of the best!!! πŸ™‚

I love Branded as Trouble! This is the one book in your series that I keep coming back to re-read. It has all the best elements: hot, bad boy cowboy and a strong, artistic heroine, great sex, friendship, and a totally screwed-up family. Colt and India are hot!

I read many authors the write cowboy themed books – Lorelei of course, Emma Lang/Beth Williamson, Sarah McCarty, Dixie Cash – just to name a few. Not all of them are erotica, but most are and they have been some of the best written books, with the most interesting characters. To have been left off of the list of “best” western books just because your books have – OH MY GOD….SEX in them just sucks. Just keep writing and we will keep reading – whether you make this list or not!!

  124. Tiss said:

My favorite Cowboy erotic romance is : Cowgirl up and ride!
I havent written a letter stating how upset I am by them not includeing you in their list, but Ammm, isn’t sex part of life? I’ve read romance for years, Erotic romance for 3 or 4, but LOVE IT. I’d rather have alittle erotic in my reads now. If that makes me a pervert, well, what do you do with your hubby at night, in the privacy of your bedroom. LOL. And yes, I like Viv’s books, and it is wasn’t for Sarah McCarty, I wouldn’t have found Lorelei James. LOVE ALL YOUR BOOKS L.!!! Yes, you authors are going to have to stick together and if possible, we readers will help to make a difference, cause like was said previously, no one is going to tell me what I can and can’t read.

  125. Samantha said:

That listing had so many repeat authors that it wasn’t really a helpful listing. Rough, Raw and Ready was my first and while I do love Trev and Ed and Chassie, my favorite EROTIC cowboy novel is: Raising Kane, and Saddled and Spurred, and Branded as Trouble.

  126. Julie said:

Well Rough Riders and Blacktop Cowboys are my favorite series by far, but my absolute favorite book is Cowgirl Up and Ride. I have probably read this on my kindle at least 10 time. I will read anything by Lorelei James!!!

How narrow-minded some people are! LJ, you are the BEST erotica writer in my book! And my fav book? Rough, Raw, and Ready! A close second is Cowboy Casanova, then Cowgirl Up & Ride. And your Blacktop series is great. I also enjoy Laurann Dohner’s Raine brothers series, even though it is not as “cowboy” as your RR series. Your Long Hard Ride was my first erotica book, & I am so glad you offered it free because I now have ALL of your books on my nookColor. You rock in my book!

I can’t pick a favorite. I’ve read and re-read all of the RR books that I have. I love the naughty cowboys and the strong feeling of connection to not only that ONE special person but the connection of family. The family plays just as important part in your stories as does the one on one action. I do need to make a confession-I am a B&N bookseller. And to Barb from Indy, I would have never known about Lorelei if “Slow Ride” had not been a free book on my Nook. I suggest her to anyone coming in the store that is looking for a cowboy romance. We, who meet with the book consumer on a daily basis, make our recommendations from our personal experience. I do have to start on the Blacktop Cowboy series next after I finish “Strong, Silent Type” and “Cowboy Casanova”. As for other series, I don’t know if they clasify as cowboy romance but the Chase Brothers series by Lauren Dane and the Westmoreland series by Brenda Jackson are similar. Strong interaction between the 2 principle charecters and strong family values. And a HOT page turner :p Thank you, Lorelei, for your books and, now that I’ve found it, your FB page.

  131. Heather E said:

Who ever wrote that list was ALL JACKED UP! And Lorelei honey, we all know COWGIRLS DON’T CRY and you were right to speak up and say something. We all know that those other authors would have been CHASIN’ EIGHT or more of your books if you’d made the list. You’ve put in your time and did the LONG HARD RIDE, and maybe you’ve even been RODE HARD, (and) PUT UP WET but you always COWGIRL UP AND RIDE. All of your fans would like to see who ever made the list TIED UP, (and) TIED DOWN because they SHOULDA BEEN A COWBOY lover of Lorelei James erotic romances. But we made a point on the B&N website letting them know we are not the STRONG SILENT TYPE and that we’d rather be RAISING KANE or be BRANDED AS TROUBLE than have readers miss out on a SLOW RIDE with a COWBOY CASANOVA. So thanks for letting us all get vocal in your honor!

You are definitely at the top of my list! And I’d much rather get WRANGLED AND TANGLED with any of your books than to get SADDLED AND SPURRED with a tame recommended romance that was so obviously CORRALLED into an incomplete top 20 list. Love ya! πŸ˜‰

Wow. That’s a little mindboggling–Lorelei, yours would definitely be on my list, along with Viv’s, and Beth Williamson’s… I know there are more, but that’s the tippy-tip-top of the little iceberg floating in my brain at the moment…

What’s the point of reading romance if it’s not erotic? Seriously! Of course your books are my favorite cowboy erotic romances…otherwise I wouldn’t follow your blog, right? Tough decision on a favorite cowboy though, oops I mean book,….hmmm…I would have to say Kade in Tied Up, Tied Down or Bran in Saddled and Spurred. Love all your alpha males with big ‘ole hearts! Thanks!

I don’t know how you were overlooked for this list. Obviously intentional since there were no erotic authors on it, which makes the list incomplete. I love your Rough Riders series and cannot pick a favorite… There are too many. One other author I enjoy is Susan Fox/Lyons and her planes, trains, automobile, and cruise ship line.

  137. Dawn said:

The first book in the Rough Riders series that I read was Cowgirls Don’t Cry. I didn’t know it was part of a series when I started. Needless to say, I’ve read them all now! My favorite part in that first book was when Jessie was saying goodbye to Landon at the pizza place. Where you wrote that that Landon placed his hands on Jessie’s cheeks, gave her a kiss and growled brought tears to my eyes and a big smile to my face. I could just picture it in my head. It was so endearing.

I have found that when it comes to the “LISTS”, I don’t ever remember anyone asking me what I like to read. I have all Rough Riders, etc, (anything with a Lorelei James nameon it) on my Nook and in print. I find erotic romance is a definite like or dislike, nothing in between. If the list people do not include it, it is their loss and their
readers loss. However, I do know that word of mouth is the best review and believe my mouth has worked overtime bringing in probably 30 – 40 new readers over the years who never knew the joy of an afternoon with a McKay!!! My personal favorite book is Cam’s, always has been always will be!! I have read some of the book and the list but they only pale in comparision. If I want tamer I will read Linda Lael Miller. Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum. Keep on writing because NYTimes is alot better than an online blog…..BTW, love the Rocky Mountain series, only caught it a few months ago and now waiting for # 3….

  140. Rachel Harris said:

Craziness! As for my favorite, I love them all but there is just something special about Cowgirl Up And Ride. My mom got to it first, then told me I *had* to move it up my TBR list, then I bought it for my mother-in-law =)

Well, ‘someone’ didn’t do their research on compiling that ‘list’. I can’t pick a favorite because they are all great! I’m a series reader and have loved the McKays! I put favoites on a REREAD list and that’s where the McKays are right now. Can’t wait for the rest πŸ™‚ But everyone must mix up their reading ‘pleasure’, not just with Cowboys. SO..Jaci Burton, Lora Leigh, Maya Banks, Shiloh Walker, Annmarie McKenna, Trista Ann Michaels, Chloe Lang, Lauren Dane to name a few are in my library. Just remember LJ you will always be on MY ‘list’.

One man who works for a big corp. Who cares what he has to say. Bet you he hasn’t read a single one of those books, bet he hasn’t read a single one of LJ’s books or any other erotica. It’s just a meaningless list and I’m sorry that the blog, obviously a B&N sponsored entity, chose to post it rather than use reviewers and readers who actually read and enjoy the cowboy romance and are open to erotica. A blog that won’t be visited by me again.
Favorite cowboy romance-Cowgirl Up and Ride. Like some others, my first real cowboy romance/erotica that got me hooked on the series. Books that went on to spice up our 30+ year marriage. I know that you’ve done that for others as well. Bet not one of those books/writers have ever been told that their books had such a profound positive influence on their (and their spouse’s) happiness. Thanks for writing intelligent, interesting plots with cowboys and females who’s character development is story enough for me.

Ridiculous that they didn’t include you!!! I actually don’t normally like western/cowboy type books but I LOVE your two series! The person who wrote the list clearly hasn’t read you!! It’s hard to pick a favorite from your books so I will say my favorites are Cowgirls Don’t Cry, Raising Kane and Shoulda Been A Cowboy although All Jacked Up is a close second because I love Keely!

I had never had the desire to read a cowboy romance until I read Long Hard Ride. It hooked me good. I have read all of your books, and can’t wait until the next on comes out. In the mean time, I have read other cowboy romances by other authors, and most don’t hold a candle to your brand of erotic romance. My favorite is Raising Kane, but Branded as Trouble is a close second. Whoever put that list together obviously hasn’t read any of your books.

I’m a fan of Rough, Raw, and Ready. And Branded as Trouble. And All Jacked Up. So really I can’t decide.

I have read and loved all 12 of your Rough Riders Books. I have read most of them more then once but I think my favorite is Rough Raw and Ready. I liked it because of how emotionally moving it was. Trevor and Edgard left me heartbroken in Long Hard Ride and it was wonderful how their story was resolved so nicely. I loved Chassie and her acceptance. My favorite part is where Edgard is alone with Chassie and tells her he is falling for her. I have never read M/M scenes before (other than in your books) so those were a little less pleasurable for me (not that I have anything against gay people at all) it is just being a heterosexual woman I prefer reading something I can relate to. But that said I thought the M/M scenes were well written, in good taste and were necessary to the story. I also love Kane’s story, Colt’s Story, Kade’s story. I love all those strong alpha males and the equally strong women. You are an amazing author.

This is a tough one because I read a lot of cowboys and erotic. I love all of your books. They were my first intro to cowboy erotic so they hold a special place in my heart. Honestly, the chance to get an ARC of Rocky Mountain desire is pretty exciting!
