Western Wednesday #37

October 6, 2010

My family–paternal and maternal–were all farmers. Which is MUCH different than ranchers in more ways than I have time to explain. Seriously. So when my dad retired last year (from being a plumbing and heating contractor) he went back to his roots, so to speak, and is helping out the people who lease our paternal farmland in eastern South Dakota. What’s he doing? Running a combine. Yep. He is in hog heaven 10-12 hours a day tooling around in the combine, harvesting soybeans. (Next week? CORN!) Here are some pics I found at the “harvesting is dangerous” website, sponsored by the state of NE, about what the combine might look like – cool beans, huh?

This last one is a picture of what the beans look like after they’ve been harvested before they go to the grain elevator:

I’m guessing he’s probably not that sad to be East of the Mighty Mo for pheasant opener in a couple weeks, either… 😉 Hey – we’ll be in RC next weekend for my birthday and our anniversary. any chance you and Erin want to come meet us in Deadwood Sunday night?
