Thursday Thirteen -13 Palindromes I’ve Used In Books

October 11, 2007

I love words – I own like 40 dictionaries and there’s nothing like getting lost in one or ten, and I’m always jotting down little used or unusual words I come across in other authors’ books. So I suppose it’s no big surprise I ended up a writer, messing with words is my passion. It all started in fifth grade in Mrs. Howerda’s class when we studied words beyond the normal noun, verb, adverb, adjective,–like homonyms (which are now called homophones) synonyms, antonyms, allegories, onomatopoeias (words that sound like they’re spelled brr, whoosh, boom) Then Mrs. H talked about palindromes and explained what they were; I was smitten with the idea that a word can be spelled the same backward and forward. The very first romance I wrote had a palindrome in the title (RADAR LOVE), as did the second (DIRTY DEEDS). Here are some of my faves in order:

1. Deified

2. Racecar

3. Radar

4. Deed

5. Madam

6. Gag

7. Peep

8. Kook

9. Wow

10. Refer

11. Eve

12. Kayak

13. Civic

Anyone have any additional ones to add?

Geez, I hope the other palindrome TT is not the person as when I posted the color TT – will they think I’m copying them? I’m not! I swear! I posted this last night right when I thought of it.

Yeah, Mom is a vital one, how did I miss it?

Bob – heh – bob and gag together are interesting ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m usually pretty good at word games, but I literally shudder when I see Sudoku puzzles –

Hmm. I’m usually good with these, but I’m watching Little House with #2 at the moment and my attention’s split.

I’ll have to mull this over and get back to you.

    Happy TT, Lorelei!

Words can be so much fun–until I can’t think of exactly the word I want and waste hours flipping through dictionaries!

LOL! I admit it. I have never spent time thinking about this. A very unusual list, one I’m not likely to forget soon.

    Happy TT.
