SHOULDA BEEN A COWBOY – releases today 8/25!!

August 25, 2009

The 7th book in my Rough Rider Series, SHOULDA BEEN A COWBOY, featuring Cam McKay, is out in ebook form ShouldaBeenCowboy_comp

Here’s a teaser:

The bigger they are, the harder they fall—in love.

Soldier Cameron McKay has found his niche, and it ain’t ropin’ steers and wearin’ spurs. His deputy sheriff job, plus battle injuries that ended his military career, keep him right where he wants to be: Off the ranch and away from his family’s pity. His darkest war memories are on lockdown, leaving him skeptical he’ll ever find a woman who wants a man who’s less than whole.

Domini Katzinski has had to control every aspect of her life since age eleven, when she was orphaned in the Ukraine. Watching others’ relationships crumble has convinced her to focus on the short-term and find a take-charge man to whom she can relinquish total sexual control. Cam fits the bill: gorgeous, with a brooding vulnerability no one else seems to see. Plus, he has his own handcuffs.

Once Cam gets over his surprise that sweet, shy Domini wants to be dominated, he is back to issuing orders. Their passion is as hot as a rocket-propelled grenade—and if Domini has her way, it’s a one-shot deal. Cam wants more, and launches a full-out sensual assault…until tragedy strikes, forcing him to change tactics as he tries to keep past demons from blowing their future together all to hell…

Warning: this book contains down and dirty games of good cop/bad cop, salty language, sweet ‘n hot lovin’, menage a trois, and hooah! a hero packin’ serious heat.

Here I am with my obligatory release day squee!

OMG! It was all kinds of freaking awesome!

It’s totally battling up there as my fav of the series …..I didn’t think anything could topple Kade off that perch for me but Cam just about managed it. I still love Kade best tho….but only by a teeny-tiny margin!

Hope we see more of Brock too!

I’m off to read them all from the start again….

Man, oh man. How do you always manage to get past the nitty, gritty things and gift us with this miracle on paper? I’ve gotta say, when you first mentioned Cam in BAT, he really made an impression on me when he stuck up for Colt when nobody else would. He said what he felt and had no apologies for it.

I just loved how when I was reading his story, I could literally see his walls crumbling down one by one. It was so amazing. And Domini too. I love how strong she was and how despite the fact that she and Cam were both different, they were still one in the same. I can’t wait for this to come out on paperback.

I don’t think I’ve cried this much since reading AJ and Cord’s story. I love you and I love your work. Can’t wait for All Jacked Up. I swear, as long as you keep writing, I’ll keep reading.

So, let me say that Cam’s story was so much more awesome than I had imagined it would be. But I’m confused on a few things and I’m hoping you can set me straight, please: At the end of Strong, Silent Type, I thought Libby was pregnant, but in SBAC it read that she didn’t have any kids or still couldn’t have any? And there is no mention of AJ and Cord having their baby? Also, are you going to enlighten us more on the Luke/Jessie situation? Will she end up with Brandt? Will they have a book or novella?
I love this series and I’m thinking maybe I need to go back and read from the beginning again to see if I missed these things the first time!
Lastly I just want to say that I am so looking forward to Keely’s story, she is such a smart ass/in your face kinda girl, she cracks me up! So when do we get the excerpt for All Jacked Up?
Sorry, I’m just full of questions.

This is the best story yet! OMG I so loved it. Can’t wait for all Jacked up and what about Jessie and Brandt (I know there is a story there)!

WOW, I am stunned by all the great comments – I will address them in one fell swoop

Thanks, Blanche, for buying it on release day!

Sayuri, feel free to squee 🙂 and once again, I’m bowled over by your continued support, thanks!

DJ – your comments are always so well-thought out and heartfelt, and you “get” what I was doing, so I don’t feel a thank you is enough, but I’ll say it anyway, thanks for reading, and thanks for taking the time to let me know you loved the book 🙂

Mirjam – YAY! Color me happy you liked it – and Keely’s book will be out Nov. 3rd…

Ashley, you do have lots of questions, I’ll answer the best I can. At the end of SST, Libby was pregnant, but that epilogue was six months later, and SBAC took place during that time, so when you catch up with Libby, she’s not pregnant…yet. Cord and AJ had their baby, AJ talked about him in the bar scene and Cord was holding him at the picnic, AJ had Foster before India had Hudson. And you’ll just have to wait and see what I have in store for Brandt McKay 🙂

Renee, have you read it yet?

Kimmi – I love to hear you think it’s the best story yet, and read above to see my answer to the Brandt question

I finished reading SHOULDA BEEN A COWBOY a few days ago and I just loved it! The plot was so good and I loved the fact you wrote about subjects that are not usually in a romance story and you didn’t try to write just happy things and I noticed you did it in other books in the series.

It’s one of my fav so far in the series and I can’t wait to read Keelyâ??s story! Too bad it will be a few more months 🙁

  10. DJ said:

Lorelei, are you kidding me? I feel like my comments aren’t enough for all your hard work and the plotting that you put into the book. I feel like some authors wouldn’t be able to get past the fact that Cam has a stump and how on earth could a one-legged man be able to make love? But, not you. That is one of the things that I love about your writing. You’re not afraid to put yourself “out” there.

You put youself outside the box and everything about your writing is so real that I feel anyone could relate to it – someone who’s lost a loved one, someone who’s dealt with rehab and drugs and addiction, someone who’s a virgin and gets to experience this amazing pleasure the first time around, someone who wants something so badly and they end up getting it (eventually). Case in point, Libby who ended up with a miracle baby. Someone getting a happily ever after with, not one, but TWO men.

That is just… so huge and I feel like reading would not be the same if I hadn’t stumbled onto your books. So, thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

I have enjoyed all of your books, but was really looking forward to Cameron’s story. Now I am all excited about Keely’s story and hopefully a Jessie story.
    Keep up the fantastic work!

Yet another great, great story. I have loved every story in your Rough Riders series. This one is now one of my favorites, along with Cowgirl Up & Ride, and Rough, Raw & Ready. That said, I honestly have loved them all. The West series is also a great addition.

I love how you delve into the different characters. There are certain core characteristics many of them share, and yet they are all so different, shaped by unique experiences, birth order, etc. You do such a great job capturing the wealth and depth of love among the family members, and yet unflinchingly show the challenges and pain that can come from such close associations. Human frailties, the weight of expectations, blows from external forces… all are there, yet ultimately there is such strength in the familial bonds, enhanced by the newer members who marry into the clan.

Another thing I love about your series is that you do let us visit some more with previous lead characters we’ve come to care so much about. I am sure as a writer it can be a challenge to serve your current story and lead players, but it is so special as a reader to be able to catch up on the others.

Enough rambling – just thank you for your wonderful work. Can’t wait for your next one!
