October Wrap-Up…Lorelei’s Life and a contest!

November 13, 2021

We went way past fall here…two snowstorms in October. Yikes.

Yes, I know it’s pretty but I wasn’t prepared, for some reason, despite being a Native South Dakotan who should be used to it after 56 years in this state.

Anyway, my month started out great. My bestie Kim was here for a week and we drove through Wyoming on our way back to Denver. It was fun showing her where Cheyenne Frontier Days takes place 🙂 and I snapped this fun pic outside of the museum 🙂

Since Kim flew out of Denver, of course I got to spend another night with this cutie pie — who is vacuuming in her princess jammies 😂 Isn’t that mini Dyson vacuum hilarious?

AUDIOBOOKS I LISTENED TO

I did a TON of crafts this month, prepping for Christmas, so that meant a lot of audiobooks. And last month I listened to two books that are definitely new favorites.

Morning Glory, LaVyrle Spencer — Chirp sale purchase — this has become ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS EVER. GAH. I can’t even tell you how much I loved loved loved it. It’s set prior to the start of WWII and it is glorious. I cannot recommend this read highly enough! The narration was amazing too.

Lord of Scoundrels, Loretta Chase — Audible sale purchase — I’ve never read Loretta Chase and shame on me 🙁 This is one of the best historical romances I’ve ever listened to. The characters were outstanding, the plot was funny, sad and poignant. I loved it so much I downloaded two more titles from her. Do yourself a favor and track down this gem. This was a new narrator to me and she knocked it out of the park.

Bluff, Jane Stanton Hitchcock — Audible Plus — The premise of this one intrigued me: A 50-something woman walks into the Four Seasons Restaurant and shoots a man and disappears. What unfolds is delicious. And without being smug, since I am a mystery writer, it is really freaking hard to lead me astray, but this book did exactly that. It was awesome, different, and such a fun revenge book.

Boyfriend, Sarina Bowen — Audible purchase — I’ve waxed poetic about Sarina Bowen’s writing a million times, and once again she proves me right in that she is consistently one of the best writers out there. Every book is entertaining, funny and spot on. Narration again, is outstanding.

Find You First, Linwood Barclay — Audible sale purchase — The premise intrigued me: a sperm donor looking for his biological children because he found out he has a deadly disease that is hereditary. I liked the book even with the crazy ending and the narrator was great.

The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie — Jennifer Ashley — Chirp sale purchase — OH how I loved this book! The hero is borderline autistic and that just makes him so much more deserving of a heroine who loves him. Great sex, hilarious scenes…I enjoyed it so much I got the next 3 in the series. **Sidenote** You all know I write mystery as Lori Armstrong, and for a few years at the Romantic Times convention, I sat next to Jennifer Ashley, who is very sweet and terribly shy. I spoke to her husband more than I did to her. But now I’m kicking myself I didn’t buy her books and get them signed when I had the chance 🙁 The narration in this book was fantastic.

Royally Screwed — Emma Chase — Audible Plus — This book was funny. If you can suspend disbelief about a royal family and a poor girl from Brooklyn, you’ll love it. And the narrators…Shane East’s voice is so freaking sexy.

She Rides Shotgun — Jordan Harper — Chirp sale purchase — This is definitely a noir story, lots of on page violence, and realizations that are too little too late, and a little girl forced to grow up fast. I was so happy this was on sale because I’d wanted to read it for a while. I really liked it a lot, but if noir isn’t your thing….skip it.

If She Wakes — Michael Koryta — Audible purchase — If I see Robert Petkoff’s name as narrator, I’ll usually guy it because he is the BEST NARRATOR out there. And once again, he proves how versatile he is. The story was okay, it dragged on too long, if I’m being honest, but it had a satisfying conclusion.

The Good Killer — Harry Dolan — Audible purchase — “On the run” plots are one of my faves in mystery, so I really liked this one. The narration was excellent.

Normally if I don’t like an audiobook, I’ll not share the title, I’ll just skip sharing/reviewing it. But these two books are the exception:

DNF — Weekend Warriors — Fern Michaels — Audible purchase — The narration on this was AWFUL. One of the characters is a 60 year old woman and the narrator makes her sound like a doddering 80 year old! It is beyond maddening. Maybe just because I’m only 4 years from being 60? Anyway, I went back and read the reviews on this audiobook after I’d purchased it and apparently I’m not the only one who felt the narrator ruined the story. I stopped at the 2 hour mark and wish I could get my damn money back.

DNF — The Pale-Faced Lie — David Crow — Audible purchase — this was another book I was happy to see on sale for $5 so I bought it because I’d heard such good things about it. When I hit the 4 hour mark, and it just kept getting repetitive with this kid doing the same shitty things over and over, and his abusive father kept getting worse, I cheated and looked at the reviews and discovered that the book didn’t get better or worse, it just kept going at that same pace. Another one I wish I could return.

WHAT I COOKED

Seemed like we had a lot of pizza in October — haha — but I did manage to make a couple of new things, in trying to clean out the fridge and freezer.

Sheet pan dinner with breaded ground turkey patties, breaded mini sausage and honey glazed carrots. It was delicious and I’ll definitely make it again.

I made the Cowboy Candy recipe from the Rough Riders cook book! It turned out great, but the jalepenos were super hot, so the end product will scorch your tongue.

I didn’t make this coconut cake — my bestie Kim made it for me when she was here and it was every bit as decadent and delicious as it looks!

I had some leftover green chili and also some chicken so I decided to make chicken enchiladas. Except…my corn tortillas were past the expiration date and they smelled funky, So I used white corn chips I had on hand. Mr. James liked the casserole a lot, but if I made it again, I would add more liquid because it seemed dry to me…

While rooting around in my freezer, I found puff pastry cups, which I think might’ve been a mistaken purchase one time I’d asked Mr. James to pick up puff pastry and he got the wrong kind. One of the colder evenings, I wanted a fall dessert, so I baked the cups and peeled several apples and made a caramelized apple filling. It turned out tasty, but the puff dough didn’t seem to cook all the way through even when I put it back in the oven. My suggestion is to skip those cups because I found them to be a pain.

I had some grapes and nectarines that need to be used, so I decided to make nectarine/grape jam. Umm. Yeah. I overcooked it, it turned out like that thick candy AGAIN, and so there are no pictures of the final result because I was pissed off that another batch of jam didn’t turn out. Sigh.

WHAT I WATCHED

In October I wrapped up a couple of series that were weekly releases, not ones that are binge-watched.

Another Life, season 2 — Netflix — this is one of those easily forgettable shows. I’d watched season 1 and figured maybe season 2 would be better. Not so. Mr. James fell asleep. Again.

Archer, season 12 — FXX/Hulu — I’d wondered how the creators would deal with the death of Jessica Walter, who played Mallory Archer in this long-running series and they did not disappoint in honoring her.

Sex Education, season 3 — Netflix — I adore the quirkiness of this series, the funny moments, the sad ones. The acting is outstanding and I look forward to every season.

The Nevers, HBO — This is a great steampunk/paranormal crossover with strong women and such an interesting premise. We loved it and can’t wait for the next episodes to drop.

A Discovery of Witches, season 2 — Sundance Now — It’d been a long time since season 1 and I had to rewatch the last 2 episodes to remind myself what was going on. Since my cable provider does not allow us to get Sundance Now, I signed up for a free week trial so I could binge watch season 2 while Mr. James was out of town because he fell asleep during season 1. While I liked season 1 and 2, it feels…slow to me. I loved the books so I’ll definitely watch the final season next year.

LuLa Rich, Amazon Original series — we actually watched this in September. It was very eye opening and made me a little sad, TBH, because so many women got suckered into this scheme. Yes, I have LuLa Roe leggings and I love them, and I tried to support the friend who sold them, but I can’t help but feel sorry for anyone who got mixed up in this.

WHAT I CRAFTED

A lot of what I made in October is for Christmas so I can’t really share it…but a couple of things I made in August and September finally got to the recipients so I can finally give you a peek at those.

One thing I did different with this kit was paint the wooden parts because they looked bleh plain wood. The picture doesn’t do the finished beaded tulips justice because they are very sparkly 🙂

I did this for a writer friend — we have a running joke about cocks so I had to have this kit. I also painted the wood on this one because it needed a little extra.

This was a fun kit to make! I included a pic of a pair of scissors so you can gauge the size. This one was a lot of work but it turned out great.

I painted and glittered this wooden sign for our youngest daughter who loves Halloween. I’ve gotten into painting stuff lately, more on that next month!

Another one of my throwback 70’s kits. I don’t get sick of these, but again, no idea what to do with them all.

That’s it for my month…except for this…Our youngest daughter is pregnant! She finally announced it this month, although we’ve known for a while. Right now she’s at 22 weeks and she is so damn cute preggers I can’t help but share this picture 💖💖💖 And they’re having a girl! We are beyond thrilled for them.

That’s it for me! Tell me about your month! I love hearing from you all and appreciate you taking the time to read this long monthly blog, as it takes me forever to put it together!

As always, leave a comment and you’ll have a chance to win something!

XOXO

L~

So happy for your daughter! Last month it was announced that my niece is pregnant again. She and her husband have been married 10 years and until a couple years ago she didn’t think it was in the cards for them to ever have kids. She surprised everyone in November, 2019 when she announced she was pregnant. Now my great-nephew will be a big brother in March, 2022. My nephew and his wife also announced they’re expecting. My nephew’s wife is only 5 weeks behind my niece.

I don’t think I’ve seen you mention the TV series “For All Mankind”. It’s on Apple + and is an alternate history of America’s race to the moon. I watched season 1 last year but haven’t started season 2 yet. I need to finish reading a few books before I start binging another TV series.

Luckily we have not yet had snow here in Massachusetts but as I type this there is quite a thunderstorm happening! I don’t think I cooked anything new or exciting. Although my daughter did turn 21 in October and instead of going out to celebrate she requested I make manicotti, which we all love.
I read the nature of fragile things and am now listening to the light between oceans.
We watched Sex Education and loved it!
Last night I went to see I mom so hard, live. Those two ladies are a riot. If you haven’t seen them you should check them out on fb…so funny!

I also got tendinitis in my Achilles and am wearing a boot for 6 weeks, joy 🤩. I’m looking forward to seeing my little nephew next week, he’s visiting for a week.

I really didn’t do much in October. I did plan a family vacation for March/April. It will be great since mu husband, both of my kids, daughter in law and granddaughter will go. It will also be my granddaughter’s first time on a plane.

We bought candy for the trick or treaters and had a total of one! My daughter (a nurse) was working so my husband ran to her house for an hour and she had over 20 trick ir treaters! He said he will buy candy and go there next year.

    That was it for October.

I’ve been thing about giving Royally Screwed a go…guess I’ll add it to my Plus check outs. Definitely will try my hand at Cowboy Candy. Hubs loves jalapeños so the will be perfect for him.

Congratulations to your whole family on the soon to arrive new family member! You have certainly been busy. Love some of the books you “read”, some I will have to get; I don’t watch tab so I’m lost on the shows 😂😂, but love seeing the cooking you’ve done. I do hate it when a recipe/dish sucks. I always use the corn chips instead of tortillas in King Ranch and tortilla soup recipes-just like the crunch. I also use them with fajitas and taco meat – and really make nachos I guess…. I love audiobooks as I can do something while reading so I don’t have to feel guilty for just sitting and reading all day. But sometimes I do just that anyway. Happy Thanksgiving!

Mid-October I got my booster vaccine and I’m so glad that’s behind me…for now. Other than recuperating from that I’ve been catching up repairs and cleaning up in the yard. I was way behind (still am) so I’m trying to stay focused. I want to get as much done as possible before it gets too cold for me outside as I am NOT a spring chicken anymore.

I read for relaxation. I still need to finish out my collection of Rough Rider books so I can start on that series. I don’t like to start on a series until I have all the books in my possession. I own and have read the Blacktop Cowboys and enjoyed it very much.

    Happy Holidays!

My month started off with my very first plane ride to California. My mom and I went to
Tijuana and had the gastric sleeve surgery done on October 11. All went very good and I’m down about 36 lbs since and my mom is down about 25 lbs. The month has flown by and I have to head back to work on Monday 🙁 it’s been nice being off because I was just about burnt out. I’m a Radiologic Technologist for our rural local hospital and this covid mess has had us all so busy and short staffed. Thanks for the awesome news letter I enjoy see what you have been up too. Love Lavyrle Spencer and Morning Glory was one of my faves. I’m going to have to look for my hardbacks & start re reading her books. She was the author who got me addicted to romance. Congratulations on your youngest daughter and cute pic too. October was a rough month here. Lost my dad after his 2 year battle with cancer and my good friends from Kentucky (Shannon & Donna) came to Ohio & helped me through the calling hours and funeral. They surprised me and somehow knew I needed them more than I did. So thankful for them. I met them at RAGT the year you were there signing & we’ve been the best of friends ever since. I love your creations & really love the rooster one. Did you say that was a kit? Where do you get them? I have zero artistic ability but love the rooster. Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving and I always enjoy reading your blog and I’m a huge fan of your books (but that goes without saying).

My granddaughter did her 1st trick or treating as a pink dinosaur but then decided to hand out her candy – she’s only 17 months and so cute.

Hey, we didn’t get the snow up here. But we sure have the wind.
We were trying to get end of the year stuff done. Finally got the Cows PG’d yesterday.
I have two eye appointments this week, one in Dickinson and One in Rapid City on Friday. I haven’t been to Rapid City since April of 2019. I was supposed to go in Dec on 19, but had to cancel, then COVID hit and I haven’t been back since. I really need to see my eye specialist. So….fast trip down and back.
Crocheting, going to craft fairs. Taking some time off. Not much else.

Congratulations to you and your family on the forthcoming bundle of joy !!!
Yes the snow is beautiful from afar and hectic trying to get around in, when your not prepared. I remember living in Wyoming and it’s June and a snow storm comes through!!! I do miss it sometimes. October was busy, work work work, then vacation, so was completely worth it!!
I love all of your crafts they are beautiful, I don’t know where you find the time!! Thank you for the book reviews !!!

Congratulations to your #3 on the upcoming birth of her first! 🥰
I am amazed yet again by how much you manage to cram into a month!! Do you get much sleep!?
It was a busy month for us as well, but all focused on 1 thing. My husband’s mom and brother both sold their farms (consolidated into 1 sale). Together they purchased 1 property (downsizing), where the contractors were supposed to build a granny suite (completely separate living quarters) for my m-i-l. The granny suite has been delayed by shortage of building supplies… until at least the end of January! in the meantime, her temporary digs is my brother-in-law’s basement.
We begged for 2 extensions and still barely managed to clear out both properties on time. Hubby and I (luckily are retired) went up on Oct 7 and came home on Nov 8. When we left home in Oct, we were wearing shorts. It snowed on the last 3 days we were there. I felt like I missed out on an entire season!
I was only expecting to be gone a week, 10 days at the most. So needless to say, when we got back, we had a lot of catching up to do around here. We missed out on 5 weeks of figs, raspberries, tomatoes, peppers, swiss chard, beans, kale out of the garden. The wild life ate well while we were gone. And the fridge needed a good purge and cleaning!
I’m just glad to be home finally!

Every month you are crafty and a gourmet. Oh yea, you write too. For October I was the good employee and scheduled my carpal tunnel surgery between our two biggest sales of the year. I had an allergic reaction to my cocktail and fell asleep in every book I tried to read. Bed ridden for two weeks and got nothing crossed off on my “to do list with one hand”. Any more daughters? I have the two most eligible bachelors in our town available.

Congrats on the new addition to your family!

I can’t believe how busy you are every month. LOL I get exhausted just reading it all! But in these times it is good to be busy.

My month was wrapped up in physical therapy and other doc visits. Sigh. The older I get, the more I seem to have to see those darned doctors more! At least I’m house/pet sitting more, so that’s a huge plus. I love animals and don’t have a pet of my own right now, so having time with friends’ pets gives me some extra love.

    Thanks for the giveaway!
