March Madness — Lorelei’s look back and a chance to win $$!

April 11, 2020

The month of March seemed ten years long–amirite? No hockey, no traveling, worries about my family and the economy…made it super hard for me to concentrate on writing. So I didn’t; I did other things to try and take my mind off this global pandemic. So strap in (not strap-on — haha that’s a post for a different day) and let’s revisit the month that was the most bizarre March ever.

WEATHER

Here in South Dakota we had a couple of snowstorms, followed by 65-70 degree days. One good thing about being fairly “rural” we can continue walking the dog on our local bike path. Happily, most people adhere to the 6 feet rule, and it honestly did my heart good to see so many families, couples, etc. outside together. I do worry for my fruit trees with these warm/cold/ice/heat variances, and I can only hope we don’t get a late May snow like last year when all my blossoms on all my trees were frozen off so I didn’t get a single piece of fruit from any of them 😣

TV SHOWS I WATCHED AND I RECOMMEND

Altered Carbon Season 2 – I LOVED the first season so so much and since it’d been 2 years I was super pumped for this new season. The great thing about this show is the premise:

More than 300 years in the future, society has been transformed by new technology, leading to human bodies being interchangeable and death no longer being permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the only surviving soldier of a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned for centuries until he’s pulled out of stasis and put into a new body.

The actor who played Kovacs in season 2 is a different actor than who played him in season 1. There are flashbacks, treachery, ethical dilemmas, violence, sexy scenes, a great AI sidekick…and season 2 didn’t disappoint at all. If you’re looking for something to binge on Netflix, this series is highly recommended.

Sex Education Season 2 – Edgy, funny, poignant, groundbreaking, sometimes uncomfortable…the characters in this series are fantastically diverse. I can admit I started watching it because I love Gillian Anderson and she doesn’t disappoint as a British sex therapist. The acting is top notch across the board, the discussions between the characters are very sexually frank, but thought provoking.

Miles Davis Documentary — I can admit I knew nothing about the man, since I’m not a huge blues or jazz fan. That said, some of Davis’s early work I loved and I really enjoyed this documentary.

Linda Ronstadt Documentary — How in the hell had I forgotten how jaw-dropping this woman’s voice was? I LOVED listening to her growing up and it was the best reminder of how talented she was, how much she influenced other artists, and how strong her legacy is, as a woman who forged the career she wanted. Outstanding!

Rush Documentary — I’ll admit I wasn’t a huge Rush fan in my younger years, (even when Tom Sawyer is an all-time favorite song) their music seemed to be the choice of stoners and at one time I thought you’d have to be high to like listening to them. I always appreciated their musicianship — there are very few 3 piece bands that create such complex music. This docu was filmed in 2010 so it is old, but it was a timely thing to take in since the unbelievable Neil Peart passed away earlier this year.

ZZ Top Documentary — I hadn’t really heard of ZZ until they released Sharp Dressed Man in the 80’s and jumped into the MTV video rotation. They have a distinct sound, and I have huge respect for 3 piece bands. I loved hearing about their origins as well as seeing them still rocking even now that they’re in their 70’s! But I do have to admit that a ZZ Top concert in the 80’s still has the distinction of being the ONLY concert I’ve ever left early. They had these car headlights on their stage and they flashed all the damn time, blinding us where we were standing. It gave me a massive headache so we had to go….

Joan Jett Documentary — sensing a theme, here on my TV watching for March? So…JOAN JETT IS THE SHIT. Love her, I always have, I always will and I don’t know what else to say. If you’re a fan, watch this. ** Side note — my male hairdresser was in a rock band and lived in LA during the time the Runaways were getting started, in fact, he lived next door to them. He swears they were as wild as they claimed to be 🙂

TV SHOW I TRIED TO WATCH AND HATED

Schitt$ Creek — so many people were talking about how hysterically funny this show is. So I tried it. I HATED IT. LIKE SERIOUSLY HATED IT. I made it through ONE episode. Humor is subjective and personal and this was just YUCK for me. I can freely admit I hated Seinfeld. Life is too short to muddle through shit you don’t enjoy. I will say, however, the series title does fit 🙄

BOOKS I READ AND RECOMMEND

I didn’t have great luck with reading in March. Again, I had more meh reads than great reads. I’ve been on a fantasy reading kick lately. Problem is, I read so many back-to-back-to-back that they all kind of blurred together. But these two books were stand outs for me:

Crescent City — Sarah J Maas — I’m a huge Sarah J Maas fan, A Court of Thorns and Roses is one of my favorite all time series, and I LOVED her Throne of Glass series equally. No brainer that I’d love her new book. It is different and since it is a first book in a series, it’ll be fun to see how this story unfolds.

The Priest — Tiffany Reisz — Tiffany contacted me and asked if I’d like an ARC — YES PLEASE! I’ve been singing Tiffany’s praises for years, I’ve devoured her books and I love the Original Sinners series so so much. The Priest was fantastic, so fantastic I blurbed it 🙂 It makes my heart happy when the work from authors I admire just keeps getting better and better.

MOVIES I WATCHED

Unless I forgot to write them down, I didn’t watch many movies last month. Too busy watching documentaries — haha.

Knives Out — refreshingly different. Great ensemble cast. Watch it if you haven’t already.

Frozen 2 — Cute movie. It was a family watch, my daughters and I watched it since we loved the first one. I guess my granddaughter loved the music. We won’t let grandpa put that movie on the next time we babysit, however, since HE fell asleep.

THE BEST FOOD WE’VE COOKED IN ISOLATION

Cooking every meal at home can get monotonous, but we’ve been mixing it up. We make pizza at home frequently–we both love thin crusts and I have a gas-fired pizza oven on my deck. So my pantry is stocked with standard pizza ingredients. However, we wanted to do something different, so we created 3 kinds of pizza, because we had these ingredients on hand. Pizza one was red-sauce base, pepperoni, bacon and mozzerella. Pizza two was fig jam base, bacon, goat cheese and arugula. Pizza three was white-sauce base, sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes, chicken, spinach, and feta cheese. All three were delicious.

I STARTED CRAFTING AGAIN

I used to cross stitch all the time, then as life got busier I had to choose how to spend my limited free time and crafting fell by the wayside. So it was fun and theraputic to pick up the needles and thread again. I found these killer beaded cross stitch kits and bought up every one they had. I’ve never done a fully beaded piece before, usually the patterns I used had a few beads here and there as embellishments. This kit is ALL beads. I love doing it and I can’t wait to frame it and hang it! It took about 2 weeks to finish and it’s approximately 5 inches by 5 inches. I’ve already started on the next one. Side note: this is NOT one of those 5D diamond painting kits, this is hand stitched, but I can admit that I enjoy doing those diamond painting kits too 🙂

NEW MUSIC

Mr. James is on an EDM kick lately, which means I’ve been listening to it too. I’ve heard a bunch a great new music, and while Sofi Tukker isn’t new per se, they are a new listening experience for me. I love them. They were supposed to play in Denver this month and we’d talked — pre-pandemic — about going to their show. For now, we’ll just listen to Purple Hat, Trickee, Best Friend and Swing.

I work retail so I’ve been working my regular shifts since Covid19 got crazy. On my days off I have housecleaning, laundry, and helping one of our girls get her new house ready so they can move in. Windows, painting, flooring, plumbing issues, new front door. Wish things would get back to the old normal. BUT at least most of our customers are nicer right now (tho there are a few who are nastier).

I’m figuring out how to teach and provide library services remotely while also providing child care for my two granddaughters. We’ve watched a lot of Toy Story – especially since we found their dad’s Buzz Lightyear and Woody in a box in the basement.
I have the Linda Ronstadt documentary recorded – need to move it up on the to-do list. I went to one of her concerts my freshman year of college – it was amazing!
Haven’t gotten much reading done – watching littles takes my attention and fixing every meal at home takes my time. Can’t wait for restaurants to reopen!

This quarantine time has been spent doing upgrades to our home. We took out our old (read: gross) carpets from when bought our home 10 years ago when our kids were babies and have now laid beautiful engineered wood floors. I am a happy DIYer and my husband is pretty handy so in the last few weeks we’ve repainted the kitchen, living and dining rooms, so we’d be ready for the new floors. We should be finished with the molding and trim by next week! 🥰 Thanks for the chance!

Lorelei, I’m retired so my life hasn’t changed. I love to read and that’s what I’m doing along with normal household duties. I am disappointed that I can’t physically be with my family. Fortunately, I have Facetime and that fills in the gap until I can be with them again.

I’ve been mostly taking care of my 2 1/2 year old and 10 month old granddaughters at my daughter’s house while she and her husband work from home. My husband is also working there, and helping me some with the girls. I’ve been reading, well, re-reading, Kay Hoppers Bishop/SCU Unit books, and trying to knit and cross stitch some, but frankly, I haven’t been able to do as much of that as I’d like. I adore my girls, but MAN!! They are exhausting!!!

Totally agree with you on Linda Ronstadt! I saw the documentary the first time it ran on CNN and couldn’t stop hearing her music in my head for days. I haven’t seen any of the other shows you mentioned.

Knives Out is one of those movies I think you have to see more than once to pick up all the different threads of the plot. Supposedly there will be another movie with Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc.

Other than reading and napping a lot, the only thing I’ve been doing is selling my house and getting ready to move back to my home state of NC.

Hi! Here in NJ we have been pretty locked down. My husband and I are both teachers so we have been teaching virtually while trying to help out our two middle school kids who are learning virtually. Been loving the slower pace and extra time with the family. We were running and hiking a lot until our state and county parks had to be shut down during all of this. Your books are wonderful and I have re-read so many of them!

I started the month recovering from surgery on 2/27. The recovery went amazingly well and I was ready to go back to work pushing paper on the 16th of March. Of course that’s when the governor initiated quarantine protocols… So set up home office and have been 40 hrs week pushing paper remotely.

For fun lots of zoom calls with family and friends. Read the recent release in Patricia Briggs’, Mercedes Thompson series (I overwhelmingly recommend this series if you have not read it). Most importantly I am rereading the rough rider series, and am on book 2 right now. Fun, fun fun

Finally, for exercise hubby and I have been taking evening walks and doing yard work. We are building a secret garden, complete with pergola.

PS. Oh yeah and I joined an online poker group. Fun playing for very low stakes.

Thanks for this opportunity to digest the past month. I am reminded of how blessed my life is.

I have been working from home, so my week days stay pretty busy.. I have also been packing up the house. I made plans about 4 months back to move in with a friend when my lease is up. Who even knew that all this would be happening at the end of April…sigh. Anyway it is a great move, since I will save a lot of money, and I will also be helping my friend out…so win win except for the moving part. I have been here over 10 years. Luckily there is a Goodwill store close that has been the recipient of a lot of stuff. Anyway, the big move is scheduled for April 22. During one of my furlogh weeks from work. We have to take 2 this quarter. so wish me luck.

Hotels are considered essential here in Illinois so I am still working. My son and DIL are both teachers so they have been off since March 17th and are staying at home. The hardest part of the whole thing is not being able to be with my granddaughter who is 2 1/2. Before all of this, I watched her 2 days a week so my withdrawal pain is a little more than most Nanas. Reading a lot on my days off. May be time to revisit the Mud Lillies for a laugh. Stay safe everyone.

I found it hard to read in the last few weeks until I bought The Ivy Years series by Sarina Bowen and I read it all in a week.

I enjoy reading your blog posts. I enjoy the TV, movie book reviews of this one. Hmmmm March was a adjustment to say the least. I am teleworking for the first time, so have learned new ways to annoy my dogs, chickens and family. Haven’t read to much, as my brain wont stop spinning….so i have decided to do small random acts of kindness for friends, family and strangers. This brings me so much joy and people all need to have a bit of sunshine in their day. These include ordering activities from amazon for my nephew and my besties son. Leaving bigger tips when I get take out. Buy coffee for the cars behind me when going through drive thru. I do go into the office one day a week. All of us are rotating to keep social distancing… so i leave little tiny surprises when i go in, on my co workers desk.

The weather has been so nuts even for San Diego Ca…. warm and then rain for days, flash flooding and everything…totally NOT normal. I live Sex Education as well and Sabrina season 3 is the best. Hmmm so many things i been watching it has all kinda blurred.

Thank you for continuing to post in insta and in your blog! Thank you for all your random acts of kindness to us fans. Take care and stay safe

Easy to avoid people as its an island and the band council has restricted all visitors aside from essential workers. Bonus of being isolated from the mainland. Although it does not stop us from being concerned about family members who work in high risk areas and other family members who have lost their jobs for now. Hubby is considered an essential worker so he goes to work as rostered and shops for what we need on his way home. We mostly cook at home because we have very few other options but that is okay, we prefer good, & healthy home cooked food. I also craft – art journaling and scrapbooking as well as making my own “junk” journals. I also read A LOT! so I am always on the lookout for “new to me authors” and keeping tabs on new releases from favourite authors. all the best for everyone and hoping y’all stay safe!

I want to thank you for a lovely blog post. Life is very odd around here. We can get snow in Maine at any time, but the warmer temperatures have been a bit wonderful. We have seen them as high as 61 so far and yet it snowed two days ago. Lol

I had had a part time job working in an office until prom & Wedding season got into full swing when I knew I would be busy. Unfortunately not happening this year! Then this shutdown pandemic started & my part time office job ended (not essential business) so I have been home with my 20 year old grandson who got laid off from his job also. Hubby is still working (he’s a wine buyer for a local adult beverage store but practices social distancing after he gets the wine stocked for the day & his order transmitted), which Is a blessing since he comes home with the wines that the sales representatives leave him to try! Works out good, with the food I make for dinner.
SO mainly I am cooking, still doing my sewing, have been making placemat/napkin sets for sale, and taking dog for long walks.
I had received a violin as a going away gift when I left a job at the end of 2019, so I have been re-learning how to play it again after a 40 year hiatus. It’s fun but hard!
And of course reading. For the most part I think I have been keeping very productive.
Tomorrow will be hard though with not being able to go to church for Easter service, but I will definitely go via facebook streaming. Then hubby is going to pick up some take out from one of the better restaurants here for a special Easter/birthday dinner for me! Then we’ll Skype with all of the family.
Hope everyone stays safe, follows guidelines for shutdown, and praying we will all be stronger at the end of this.

This has been a long week. I waited forever for doctors to call so we could have our “visit” and both doctors did not call. I spent this week reading, cleaning my porch so it’s ready for spring, put out hummingbird feeders after I made their drinks (4 cups water to 1 cup sugar- cook until sugar is fully clear), worked on a miniature bookstore that I got for Christmas- tomorrow it will be finished, made a German Cheesecake that uses ricotta instead of quark that I can’t find around here, did all of my regular things and all the rest of the time I did my favorite thing I read books- a mystery by Andrea Kane, Educated- a biography, and my favorite romances. Great week.

As a result, I’ve made my first international Facebook friends. I have one from Denmark, a nice couple from Wales, one from Ontario, Canada, and another from Australia. Thanks for reminding me about all those counted cross-stitch projects I have in the closet, three started but never finished and several that I really wanted to do but never got to. I have been working from home since mid March and am working more hours than before. Going into the office and having a teenager in school kept a limit on my hours but now that has all halted and I’m working 10-16 hrs a day. Thankfully my girl is super smart and responsible so she comes and does her school work beside me each day but doesn’t require my assistance. Hubby is still working, I find I’m more productive when he isn’t here. Because of the amount of hours I’ve been working I haven’t had any fun projects going. Some of the time I have the tv on in the background so I’ve been watching Golden Girls, Designing Woman, Dharma and Greg, Justified, Parks and Rec) and my hubby and I just started watching Outlander. I was tired of being on the go all the time with work, school, water polo…life, but this is not how I wanted to slow down and am ready for our regularly scheduled programming! Thanks for being a happy distraction ☺️

My career as a budget coordinator for a school district has always kept me very busy. I do not sit idle ever! Unfortunately, this pandemic is about ready to drive me crazy!!! My house is super-organized, my disabled husband has a new ramp to enter the hot tub, the herb garden and succulent/cacti gardens look beautiful and I am up to exercising a total of 60 minutes a day. Goals baby!!!!! In addition to those completed chores, I have completed my spring semester MBA class. Sheeeeshhhh…….. I need to return to work soon!!! To be honest, I have never been a TV watcher since my time is needed elsewhere. Yellowstone caught my attention when it first came out and I love Kevin Costner. I managed to purchase both seasons and watch every episode. Ooohhlalala!!!!
Cooking/Baking/Grilling/Smoking are also one of my favorite items to do and my husband’s. He cannot use his right hand so I am his right hand man……lol. Anyway, I have smoked several types of meat, fish, etc. We learned a lot about grilling steaks, etc. and learn to love medium-rare since it has more taste. I have managed to excel in cooking gumbo and etouffee for my Cajun friends. My grandson and I have baked cookies, cakes, etc. My family loves my food skills!!!!
All three of my children have careers that keep them on the front line of this pandemic (two nurses and a law-enforcement officer). I manage to keep in close contact with these three because this will forever change them.

I love reading your newsletter. I look forward to the email each month.

I added Linda Ronstadt ‘The sound of my voice” to my watch list. Her voice is so powerful and the voice of many generations.
And the ZZ Top doc on Netflix is in our list. So many wonderful songs. Too hard to pick just one favorite!

My family has been doing good. All are retired so I’m grateful they are staying inside. Miss them but health is the priority.

Weather here in Vermont has been up and down. We go from 55o sunny days to 29o cold, damp, rain then flurries. The highlight to the warmer sunny days is hearing the birds chirping away their springtime songs.

As for my husband & I: Well due to Fibromyalgia/chronic pain/bad back I’m a stay at home wife. Grateful that my husband is on a rotation at his office job that he works from home a few days a week. When he goes to the office, there are only 7 people in a 80 person professional building.

So he has an active YouTube channel to keep him occupied. While I have been diving head first into my knitting projects. (Your cross stitch work is lovely!) Currently working on blankets and scarves for Christmas. And rainbow scarves for a Vermont chapter of LGBTQ Pride Community Org to be sold on their website for September Pride month! I also have 20 more balls of yarn coming via Amazon so I’m going to be very busy!

    Movies for us have been:
    Deadpool and Deadpool 2!
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker
The Normal Heart (Have Kleenex at the ready!)
Inconceivable (Gina Gershon is remarkable in everything she does.)
The Rescuers Down Under on Disney! (Joanna is my favorite!)

    TV Shows:
    M.A.S.H. on Hulu.
The Big Bang Theory on DVD.
Good Eats (Husband can’t get enough of Alton Brown.)
And….SCOOBY DOO! (I’m a huge fan!) If you have not watched Mystery Incorporated, you must! It’s on Netflix and Boomerang. Watch from beginning to end.

I have also been reading a lot more. Most recent books:
    *DRAGON DANCER” BY ZOE CHANT
    *ROUGH LOVE” BY LAUREN LANDISH
*LIFT HER UP” BY T.S. JOYCE
    *DUPLICITY” BY AMBER LEA EASTON
Book currently in hand: “SPUN OUT” by Lorelei James! A Xmas gift from my niece.

As for any interested knitters out there: The book “Stitch N’ Bitch” The Knitter’s Handbook by Debbie Stoller is one I highly recommend. Great stories and patterns and for new comers, a how to start manual. It is available on Amazon.

Time to cook our Easter dinner. Ham steaks, scrambled eggs and tater tots! Breakfast for dinner is outstanding!

Wishing Mr. James a wonderful, happy healthy Easter and may we all continue to strive forward and get through this together.

    Positive Vibes,

I have to avoid the news on TV. I wait a day and get it from NPR or the BBC

I am on disability, so my life hasn’t changed much. I don’t go out a lot because it ramps up my pain and fatigue. What has been different has been telemedicine appointments and my husband working from home. I do continue to do a Lot of reading. It keeps my days occupied and my mind off my body. Keep writing, you do a lot for me.

I have been sewing. since this all started last month, I have sewn 7 quilt tops and made 12 pet crate beds from leftover blocks and fabric. The pet beds went to a local pet rescue. And reading, lots of reading.

I really enjoyed Knives Out but I’m not really a TV person & I haven’t been reading as much as usual with all these kids at home. I did read Lauren Landish’s The Dare, caught up with Piper Rayne’s Baileys & have started Nicole Edwards’ Bound in Darkness. I love, love, love this series!!! I’ve done lots of projects around the house & even built a table out of scrap wood I found around our farm. I’ve also very recently become addicted to TicTok!!!!
Oh & yeah I’m like a short order cook around here.

I haven’t done much, Mostly just take occasional walks, watching regular TV. I have not been able to read or anything that takes much concentration. I never really had problems with anxiety before but now it is through the roof. Also, I am in limbo with my full time job and furloughed with my part-time job.

I’ve had a heck of a time getting into some kind of routine during my stay-at-home/social distancing. But it’s getting better. I’m retired and somewhat of a recluse. I don’t mind my own company. But for some reason this has been really hard. Maybe it’s the lack of choice. Not being able to get in the car whenever.

Lorelei, where did you find that bead work? Is it a Mill Hill? Is it a bead-weaving or is it on perforated paper? I tried searching in the Wichelt website (main salesplace for Mill Hill) as well as the Mill Hill website; unable to find, but the Wichelt is horrible for searching! I’ve done counted cross-stitch and other forms of needlework for decades & would love to try that one. Did find a White Orchid that was also beautiful so will be trying that one as well, like I needed another pattern (grinning)

I’ve been retired for about 16 months so things aren’t really so different for me. All the needlework, books, dvds, cds, etc organizing that I thought would be done shortly after retirement…HA! Still working on them. The dvds are done; I had to uncover the dining room table! Now it’s covered with another project. I’m currently organizing & listing threads for the needlework projects. Creating spreadsheets for all the various types of threads, beads, fabrics, etc is a bit challenging! I just finished stitching a 1977 Star Wars poster pattern; looked at it & remembered gazing at that poster while standing in line oh so many times waiting to see that movie again & again & again. I may have to get the stitching framed, and then figure out where to hang it. The walls are pretty full, esp. since lots of windows.

Of course I’m reading lots, rereading even more, was dipping into the Rough Riders the other day, and a couple weeks ago, I was up in Minneapolis with that family!

The only drawback to all this, outside of the worries about family, friends & people, contamination and washing the hands; missing getting together with family & friends, etc is not being able to just go if I get the urge. I so WANT to go to a needlework shop & a book store; never mind that I could stock either one from my own stash! And shopping online, altho’ I do very well at that, just doesn’t have the same feel as in the actual shop. Ah well, it will come back some day, & hopefully, safely!

As much as I hate this self quarantine, I have to say my husband and I are going crazy with projects around the house. Some things I’ve been wanting to do for years. Today’s project was putting lights in my kitchen pantry. Stay well everyone.

You’re not alone, AnnaMarie! Apparently so many people are taking advantage of the “time at home” to do cleaning, weeding (closets, etc), diy projects, and so forth that my trash company felt the need to send out a general email politely suggesting that we quit being so mean to the folks picking up the residential trash by burying them, & renting a dumpster to put it in. Maybe even split the cost with the neighbors? I’ve not seen much sign of it in my neighborhood, but others have talked about what all they’ve done. Shame Good Will had to close with the rest; quite a few have commented that they had lots to go there & not all are saving it for when Good Will opens back up. I’ve wondered if they’ll want stuff anyway; having to worry about the virus being on the materials. Ah well, a question for later! Enjoy, lights in the pantry sound wonderful…but then, so does a pantry!
