February Flashback — Lorelei’s life and a contest!

March 14, 2020

Hey-ho everyone! This is the first of the “month that was” recaps, where I talk about what I read, watched, did for fun, places I traveled to, anything I believe was memorable enough to mention. Knowing me, I won’t get these wrap-ups done until mid-month…contest info at the end of this post!

TRAVEL: Mr James and I made 2 trips to Denver in February. First was to help our oldest daughter celebrate her birthday (and to see the cutest EVAH grandbaby) The second trip was so Mr. James could help our son-in-law Sheetrock the grandbaby’s playroom (and to see our darling grandbaby). I LOVE Denver and I’m glad it’s only a 6 hour car drive. No home Avs hockey games during either trip which was a bummer. With the guys working, we snuck in an IKEA trip so we didn’t have to listen to them bitch about having to go to IKEA in the first place and keep asking if we were done shopping yet šŸ˜

READING: I thought I’d read a LOT during February, but when I looked back…it wasn’t as much as I’d imagined. Maybe because I had several “meh” reads. Those books I’ll keep to myself, however I will share the book I LOVED. When I saw that Lisa Kleypas had this book coming out:

I revisited the Ravenels series and realized I’d missed a few:

To be honest, Lisa Kleypas is one of like 3 historical romance authors I’ll read. In fact, she is one of my favorite authors PERIOD. Anyway, Chasing Cassandra, the 6th book in this series, was wonderful. Uniquely flawed characters, a swoon-worthy romance and the period details are outstanding. Highly recommended!

TV BINGES: Apparently I watched TV more than I read books in February because when I jotted down the shows I binge watched…I was a surprised at the list I compiled.

The Expanse is an Amazon original series. Season 4 just finished so yep…I watched all 4 seasons. For the most part, I prefer to watch Sci-fi rather than reading it and I’m fascinated by the fact so many shows/authors use colonization of Mars as a major plot point. That’s the case with The Expanse — humans have colonized Mars and the Belt which leads to all sorts of conflicts between Earth dwellers, Mars dwellers and the Belt dwellers. Because the background noise is so prevalent in each episode, I found it much easier to follow along when I turned on the captioning. A few characters have heavy accents and while it lends authenticity, they can be difficult to understand. Overall, it is a significant investment of time, each episode is an hour long, but if you like space drama, this is a great one to put on your watch list.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 3 on Netflix — This is one of the few series on this list that I started watching when it premiered. And it is so campy, over the top with one of the best opening sequence/intros! I don’t skip it even after seeing it so many times because it is so cool. I know there are people who look at the show and say it’s too Satanic or even not campy enough (those people actually prefer the comic? WTF?) but this show has an amazing cast, and the storylines tackle more than just teen angst. I’m looking forward to Season 4.

The Good Place — Seasons 1-3 on Netflix. I don’t watch anything on network TV anymore which is how I skipped right over this gem. Now I’m kicking myself that I didn’t watch it sooner, even when I’m so happy I could watch one episode after another. What a cleverly written concept, with so many things going on that I can’t begin to list them all here. If you’re looking for a laugh out loud show that is surprisingly poignant, cue this one up immediately. (AND NO SPOILERS FOR THE FINAL SEASON AS I HAVEN’T WATCHED IT YET!)

The Magicians Seasons 2-4 on Netflix — I originally watched Season 1 and while I liked it, I didn’t love it so I didn’t prioritize watching additional seasons. Something triggered this to show up in my ALSO WATCHED screen so I gave in. The acting can be great and terrible, and usually that’s a deal killer for me. But the plot keeps the over arcing storyline intriguing, and I love me some Eliot and Margo. There are a few episodes in Season 4 that made me a little teary-eyed they were so well done. The new season is out on Sy-Fy and I’ll likely wait until it’s on Netflix so I can binge watch it.

Locke & Key on Amazon — Super cool premise, learning that your ancestral home has magical keys that magically appear and open a variety of doors/worlds. The series was based on a graphic novel by Joe Hill who is Stephen King’s son, so it’s really no surprise I liked it so much. The family dynamic between the siblings, how they’re mourning their father and their mother’s lack of coping skills makes it more than just run of the mill Haunted House fare.

MOVIES:

JOJO Rabbit — the title of this movie really threw me off wanting to watch it. Plus it’s about a Nazi kid? That’s usually a hard pass for me. Yet somehow, I agreed to it. And HOLY CRAP what an unbelievably original concept! This movie totally blew my mind and I cannot recommend it highly enough. In fact, it was so good I don’t remember any other movies I watched in February, just this one.

SPORTS: Yeah, I watched the Super Bowl. And the half-time show (weird fact: J Lo and I are birthday buddies!) Not a fan of either team so it was anticlimactic. However, I did love watching the NHL All-Stars and that was awesome since they brought women hockey players in to compete and play. Now all we need is equitable pay for female athletes — and that’s as political as I’ll ever get šŸ˜œ

To celebrate the extra day we had in February, if you leave a comment, I will pick one lucky winner for a $50 Amazon gift card!

I went to a hockey game in Feb also. I am a Washington Caps girl living in Las Vegas and in Golden Knight territory. I was hoping to see Ovechkin get his 700th goal but no, they unfortunately lost to the LVGN too, but I had fun. I 100% agree with you watch the NHL All Star game and seeing the women on there was awesome.

I don’t watch too much telly, as I usually have my nose in a book (funny that), but a work colleague asked if I’d seen Virgin River (which I hadn’t) so that weekend I watch the first episode which turned out to be a binge fest until I finished all 10 episodes. I went to work on the following Monday and told my colleague I hated her, because there wasn’t a second season until September this year!

We’ve been doing a rewatch of Breaking Bad, no matter how many times I watch it I pick up on things I missed and how it all plays in to what happened in the end. And of course we are watching Better Call Saul which last season started overlapping with the BB timeline. It’s interesting to watch. We did a lot of day trips last month checking out things in our state, my favorite was the trip to Abilene TX with all the art/sculptures of Children’s literature. I read a lot in Feb, with favorites being Caulky (a m/m romance) by KM Neuhold and The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker…just noticed they both use initials, I had a lot of not so good reads this month which like you I’ll keep to myself.

Thanks for making my Monday morning! I absolutely LOVE Sci-Fi movies and TV. I know that Joe Hill is considered more in the horror genre, but I am in thrall with Locke & Key. This show is amazing. Hill has a unique way of exploring the human condition just as his father does. Love it! You also named another favorite of mine, The Magicians. I admit, I’ve fallen behind, but being forced to find other things to do, I may get the chance to catch up.

Thanks also for talking about the grandbaby. They are precious. I’ve a five month old granddaughter and a grandson on the way in July. We are truly blessed, as are you!

Iā€™m so glad you got to see your grand baby twice! I know how much you live spending time with her.
The outcome of the Super Bowl was a huge disappointment, BUT I did win $200 in a football pool, so I couldnā€™t be too mad about it.

Sounds like you had a busy month. You might want to check out Outlander on Starz.

My family laughs at me, I can’t stand to be in a completely quiet room. We love in the city and I grew up in a very rural area. If I have complete silence in the room, all I hear is the traffic and constant movement outside the window. So while I don’t watch the TV, it is always on as back ground noise while I devour books. I began a reread from beginning to end of the Rough Riders series and only have 4 books left to read. I was on medical leave amd had rime on my hands. I love revisiting my friends in Sundance. Might have to stop by Jackson Hole next

Thanks for the update. I too love Lisa Kleypas books and have the latest on hold at the library. Sadly, all our libraries are closing due to Covid-19, so it will be awhile until I get my hands on it. Bummer. I rented “Jojo Rabbit” yesterday and really enjoyed it, the director was brilliant in it and I love how they took an awful person and made them ridiculous. I grew up in a hockey family, so very sad about NHL postponement, but do hope people are safe. Keeping everyone in thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Hunker down with some good books!

I need to binge on so many series on Netflix. As for Sci-Fi, I recently read Starbreaker by Amanda Bouchet, which is the second book in the sci-fi romance Endeavor series. It is really good, so I highly recommend it.

Thanks for your insight on those shows, there are a couple I have had on my to watch list but wasn’t sure about them.

  132. Ashley said:

I will definitely check out the book! You are one of my go to authors so love seeing who your go to authors are.

Go Red Wings! We Michiganders stand strong behind our home teams, even the Lions.
I had favorite historical writers but I just canā€™t do them anymore. Staying true to period times makes me scream, then hundreds of years later we still arenā€™t at equal pay.
My last binge watch was Beauty and the Beast from the ā€˜80ā€™s. I never realized how dark the settings were (hello, tunnels of NY). I was shocked to learn that either a producer or something was Mr Martin from Game of Thrones. Interesting.

I love that you love Lisa Kleypas! Same, sheā€™s one of the few historical authors I follow along with, and I adore her. I was also the same way about JoJo Rabbitā€”it was a pass for me for a long time because of the subject matter just being too depressing. But the scene with the boy and his mother at the dinner table is one that so was so well done I think itā€™ll stick with me for a long, long time.

Glad youā€™re doing well. Miss you!

I wish I had more time to binge watch shows or read books. I get bored sometimes after 2 episodes so I don’t usually binge watch anything.

  156. Stephanie Erickson said:

I donā€™t watch much but sometimes I read so much I have to sit and binge. So this weekend I sat and caught the latest episode of Outlander and then I binged out on Reign on Netflix.

Enjoy your new grandbaby, it’s the best experience.
Love being with my 5 grandchildren any time I can
    be with them .

I didn’t realize the Stephen King connection to Locke and Key, it’s absolutely on my watch list now..

Totally agree with you Loelei – Jojo Rabbit is FREAKIN’ HILARIOUS!!!! Who’da thunk a movie set in WWII Nazi Germany about Hitler Youth could be funny??? Sooo funny!!!
I’m a proud Maori from New Zealand & we native kiwis are kinda known for being piss-takers of the highest order (generally of ourselves), naturally cheeky buggers & just all around funny folk. We’ve been priveleged viewers of Taika’ Waititi’s cinematic talents for years here in NZ. Portraying that cheeky, self-deprecating, slightly skewed/odd sense of humor (really, it’s like a seperate national language in nz) is a given in Taika’s films. He’s bloody brilliant at it too.
*Check out ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ or ‘Boy” – couple of recent examples*
*AND he works & directs Chris Hemsworth in the Thor films. Hoo-boy! *
Seeing Taika, a descendant of the Te Whānau-ā-Apnui tribe, receive an Oscar was a proud day for all New Zealanders Maori & non-Maori alike. Ka mau te wehi!

    Mauri ora!
