Drums of August — Monthly Wrap-Up Post — ooh and another contest!

September 11, 2021

For some reason August seemed to drag on forever. Maybe because it was a billion degrees here. Maybe because of the shit show going on all over the world. Maybe because I got a lot of last minute-ish stuff done, but not what I really wanted to work on.

I will not be sharing pics of my garden produce, as something is eating my tomatoes. Whatever it is, it takes several bites out of the ripest tomatoes and stops. So the fruit is ruined but the critter decided not to finish it. Frustrating.

Contest info is at the bottom of this post!

PLACES WE WENT

First weekend in August we went camping in northeastern SD and decided to hike Crow Peak (outside of Spearfish) on Sunday around noon. We read that the hike was 3.4 miles. Not bad, right? We had Copper with us and we usually limit walking him no more than 3 miles because he has such short legs. Long story short, it was a 1500 ft vertical climb and the 3.4 miles was ONE WAY. It was hot and although we had water, I ended up getting seriously overheated and my entire body hurt by the time we reached the bottom. Plus we broke poor Copper. BAD DOG PARENTS. I had to literally carry him to the vet the next day because he wouldn’t walk or eat or drink anything. It took him longer to recover than it did me; I was fine the next day, no soreness. Although, I had lab work done early the morning after the hike and I was still so dehydrated that I barely had enough urine to fill 1/4 inch of the cup (TMI I’m sure) and it threw off my lab results.

The next weekend we headed to Denver to see this cutie — and her parents 🙂 She loves her dog and he loves being in the water with her 💖

WHAT I WATCHED

100 Foot Wave, HBO — This documentary series was about big wave surfers, specifically the discovery of the world’s largest swells in Nazare, Portugal. It was a fantastic documentary and I highly recommend it.

Loki, Disney Plus — Loki is such an awful character — which makes for delicious drama in the Marvel movies — that I wasn’t sure how this character could be…redeemed or at least less villain-ified. So while it was entertaining, I didn’t love this series and much preferred Wandavision.

Wrath of Man — you all know I love me some Jason Statham! And I’ve liked several Guy Ritchie projects so I figured it’d be great. It was okay. Nothing new as far as plot or action scenes or steamy love scenes. When it ended, Mr. James said…that sucked but at least he didn’t punch a shark like in The Meg 😂

WHAT I COOKED

My mother actually has tomatoes and she shared so we whipped up BLTs. Our new favorite bacon is pricey ($19 for a 3 pack at Sam’s Club), but holy crap, this might’ve been the best BLT I’ve ever had.

Since my cherry tomato plants are on my deck, I did manage to grow a few of them before the heat killed them. I cut up tomatoes, snipped some fresh basil, grated a little parmesan, tossed the spaghetti in butter and salt. It’s so easy and so good and tastes like summer.

FLOWERS 🌺🌻🌼🌷🌹🌸

Most the annuals are done blooming, but my hibiscus blooms late. The flowers are about 6 -7 inches across and are just gorgeous.

I planted 4 gerbera daisies and got ONE bloom. Skipping them next year.

Our oldest daughter grows beautiful roses and these smell heavenly. It’s even better when my little granddaughter hands them to me 😍

WHAT I READ

Not to make any of you jealous…but I did get an arc of The Legacy, by Elle Kennedy. I LOVED it. It comes out soon so you can love it too!

Razorblade Tears, S.A. Cosby, hardcover purchase because look at this cover! — this southern noir is one of the best books I’ve read this year. Dark, gritty, violent, it shows all the ugliness of regret and vengeance in the name of that grief and regret. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! This is the same author who wrote Blacktop Wasteland, which was one of my top 5 novels from last year.

Velvet Was The Night, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, hardcover purchase (again, LOOK at this glorious cover!) this is supposed to be noir, but it missed that mark for me. I liked the story, set in Mexico City in 1971, very retro, so if you want to try something with a unique setting, this would fit the bill.

Chronicles of Stone series, Sawyer Bennett –– I didn’t realize this was a 5 book series until I finished the first book. While I enjoyed the first 2 installments, and I will go back and finish this series eventually, it’s pricey– each book is $5.99 digitally. Yes, I know many of my books are that much or more, which is partially why I’m no longer with that publisher 🙂

AUDIOBOOKS I LISTENED TO

I’ll admit I think some of these were at the tail end of July, I honestly didn’t keep track as well as I should have 😜

Funny Business, Kayley Loring, audible purchase — I’ve been on a serious Kayley Loring kick and I love her sense of humor. This was a good book, the narration again was top notch, but it wasn’t my fave book by her (more on that for next month’s post)

Bombshell, Sarah MacLean, audible purchase — LOVED the start of this new historical series about women skulking around London and serving out their brand of justice to the aristocracy. The narration was SUPERB and I cannot wait to see where the author takes us with the next characters in the series.

Waylaid, Sarina Bowen, audible purchase — SARINA BOWEN CANNOT WRITE A BAD BOOK. I love her writing and her worlds, and the family dynamics, so if you haven’t picked up the True North series DO IT.

Top Secret, Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy — because I’d read both Elle and Sarina this month and I love when they write together, when this popped up as available in the audible plus catalog, I downloaded it even when I’d already read it a few years back. LOVE the narration, it’s the cherry on the top of this fantastic m/m lovestory 🙂

I Eat Men Like Air, Alice Berman, audible purchase — this is a mystery told in flashbacks about a group of post-college rich kids at a wedding and one of them winds up dead. So was it truly suicide? Or a murder? I really got into this about halfway through. I liked it a lot, the title comes from a Sylvia Plath poem.

Where Dreams Begin, Lisa Kleypas, audible purchase — since I’d listened to so many Kleypas books last month in preparation for her new Ravenels release, I missed her storytelling and found a couple of her books I have not read. I loved this story — a widow taking a job with a rake and all the love and lust that ensued. I adore everything Lisa Kleypas writes 😍

The First Girl Child and The Second Blind Son, Amy Harmon, included in audible plus — I wasn’t entirely sure about this series since it settles someplace between YA fantasy and New Adult fantasy with religious undertones. But I ended up LOVING the books, the characters, everything about this world she’s created. It’s very unique so if you’re looking for something unlike anything else out there, this is a good place to start.

WHAT I CRAFTED

I’m still on that 70s retro kick and I finished up a couple more of the straight stitch kits from Riolis. They’re really easy.

I changed the colors on this just a bit and I’m happy with how it turned out 🙂

How cute are these fluffy little sheep? This is a small piece, maybe 3X3 finished.

This is another small one and so I’ll figure out what I’m going to do with all the rustic 3X3 — don’t know if I want to frame them together or what.

I accidentally ordered an extra of this kit, so I thought, how about if I just turn it into a winter scene with mountains and different trees? I picked my thread and winged it. And I’m not sure that I’m happy with how it turned out. But I’m keeping it real — haha — and wanted to share that not everything works as intended. The last pic is a side by side image of the original kit I finished and then my version.

I bought a box of these little cones, they’re about 4 inches or so. I got out the paints because I wanted to craft something other than beading and stitching kits. They look pretty cute but I have NO IDEA what to do with them or the other 21 that are in the box. Suggestions would be welcome!

I did finish 4 other projects, but since those are gifts, I’m not ready to share the finished projects yet — so look for those next month. They’ll likely be the only crafts I get done because I’ll be traveling next week and then I’ll have just a week before my PA/bestie Kim flies up here for a week for some work and fun 🙂 PLUS I’LL BE WRITING 😲

Tell me about your fall plans! Are the kids back to school? Are you canning or freezing produce? Has the Covid resurgence locked you down again? I’ve been back to wearing a mask etc since the first of August. After hearing what my RN daughter is dealing with, and all the other health care professionals, I’m grateful that I had all of my medical procedures done in August so I won’t need to visit a medical facility for another year except to get a flu shot and some dental work.

LEAVE A COMMENT AND I’LL PICK A WINNER FOR A GIFT CARD OR A SIGNED BOOK OR EVEN A CRAFT KIT IF YOU WANNA TRY YOUR HAND AT THAT 🙂

XOXO

L~

Kiddo has been back in school for a month already, they start in the first half of August. We have no plans for Fall because of hubby’s work schedule. I have a couple of cross stitch projects that I want to do, which means setting aside another one that I had started to get me back in the groove- which I then slipped out of again. One project will be a lot easier than the other because I have to create my own pattern for it.
I did get a new tattoo of Stitch yesterday. It’s my largest and most colorful. I’m hurting, but it’s going to be amazing once it heals.

Fall is my FAVORITE time of year. I will miss all the fresh produce here in South Jersey but the next three months will be crisp and gorgeous and best of all, it’s comfort food season! Sadly I will miss out on most of the season. I am an RN and after a crazy 15 months I took some time off to enjoy my kiddos before they returned to school. Now it’s back to reality and unfortunately back to trying to keep my head above water working as a hospital nurse during a pandemic 😞. Luckily I just downloaded the entire Blacktop Cowboy series to help me unwind after stressful days 😊

My kids were back to school this week and I was back to work teaching. My daughter was remote learning all last year (health reasons) and it’s exciting/nerve-wracking for her to be back in a classroom. We have several restrictions right now, but low case numbers. I’m hoping that continues and we can make it into winter without surging numbers.

Right now doing last minute stuff for my son’s surprise 30th birthday party (tomorrow). Unfortunately my granddaughter is sick so it’s up in the air whether or not my daughter-in-law can get there with the baby or how we’re going to trick my son to come in without them. The rest of September should be calm and relaxing and we’re heading into fall which is my favorite season.

I didn’t get to can any garden items I grew this year since I missed the planting with the horrible weather. Would rain whenever I was planning on planting so missed it. At my job we have worked throughout COVID. Haven’t been anywhere except one weekend went to nephews small (20), at home & outside wedding where all were tested/vaccinated etc except a couple. No problems and all went well. Bride works in hospital COVID unit so very cautious. Other than that, trying to get rid of stuff, reading lots of books and listen to audiobooks every weekday. Praying hurricane season is quiet from now on and no floods or anything else. We really need a break for twenty years or more! Anxious for November to be here just to get out of the Hurricane Season. COVID is affecting a lot of friends and co-workers families. Hope to be caught up with a half way minimalist house by Oct. and then maybe get a contractor for some house work and addition to be built. Did have over a dozen trees cut down that were too close to house or leaning. Have 20 acres of trees/woods so we still have plenty believe me! Haven’t done much but have read tons, 4-8 books weekly.

My job has made me hate talking on the phone so maybe one day soon I will enjoy it again 😛 No more being lied to and cussed out by our customers. I am truly hoping not working in customer service will make me actually like people again. So for now I am enjoying my time with my basset hound, Murphy aka the Basshole, working on jigsaw puzzles and scrapbooking/card making again.

We’re home people other then basic family so we visit but other wise we try to avoid going out to shop unless needing to & shop online mostly unless groceries. Regarding Covid, things are going well till now and my childen went back to in person school in September. August was very long, hot, and frustrating, with a side of smoke and ash. August in California is typically hot, but I miss the many years that did not include smoke and ash from wildfires.

The kids took the grandbaby to visit his auntie and uncle for a week so we missed a visit with him. He did enjoy the trip with a visit to see whales and penguins and to meet the ocean for the first time. Looking forward to his first birthday this month.

Frustration reared its ugly head with trying to get my knee replacement surgery covered by insurance and all the COVID notifications from work. Why they won’t let us work from home part time is stupid.

Discovered a new winery in town so there’s always that fun. Did a lot of canning and wish we had fewer tomato plants.

Did get more reading/listening done so my list for the year is progressing.

Glad you got a visit in with your beautiful granddaughter!

I’m a school librarian, so I’ll be busy teaching and getting kids to love reading.
As far as the cute ice creams…get a small picture frame and place one on the outside. Add/place a gift card to a local ice cream shop…we have Cold Stone and Baskin Robins here in Va Beach. Give it as a gift to a kiddo. The parent can take a pic while they are eating the ice cream and later put it in the frame.
    Happy Fall Ya’ll!

I for one really appreciate what the nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals are having to deal with the days. I haven’t changed my behaviors at all since COVID began. I’m completely vaccinated but I’m still wearing a mask, washing hands, social distancing, and I stay home unless it’s absolutely necessary to go out. I was afraid it was too early to relax the COVID restrictions, and lo and behold, we are not only back where we were to begin with, we have surpassed the numbers. Now our children are getting sick and dying in record numbers. I’m so worried about my little great grandson who is only 19 months old. I just wish the unvaccinated would CHOOSE to get vaccinated, including my own family members who refuse. Sorry for the rant, but I’m sick of the situation.

Anyway, my main project right now is spreading out gravel I bought for underneath my free standing carport. I’m not a spring chicken so I’ve been giving it my best for about an hour at a time.

If this was not so sadly unreal it would be funny. Last Memorial Day I I was walking into our garage, and a heavy board fell against my humerus. My arm was broken but I did not realize this until 2 months later. After an X-ray, MRI and 3 Dr’s appointments.
Now I have had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor, have had a rod placed in my arm and a host of other medical procedures are still to come. All of this is true. Feel free to use for a future storyline.
That’s is what I’ve been up to. I’m grateful for every day.

Once labels are printed from the database, there will be about 750 envelopes to stuff and stamp. Mailing is set for the first week in November, and then after a few days the renewals will start coming back in the mail, so the database will have to be updated and payments processed. Good thing I’m retired, so I have time to do all this! I really do enjoy this process every year.

Wow! As always, I love to see pictures of your flowers. 🙂
We’ve been eating a lot of BLTs as well! I partially cook up a 1 kg package of thick cut bacon, then stick it in the freezer. Then I take out what I need, wrap in paper towel (to prevent mess), and microwave for 45 seconds on high. While that is happening, slice tomatoes and rinse lettuce. Slap some mayo on toast, and Ta Da!
We’re getting A LOT of tomatoes this year. I prefer canning over freezing. I’m up to 14L of stewed tomatoes. I still have 24 jars of pickled beans from last year, so I opted to give away all my spare beans to family, friends and neighbours. I have no idea how many lbs I’ve given away. One day I gave away 4 lbs! But they abruptly stopped producing now, as they do.
In late Aug I planted more bush beans, carrots, and spinach. These will take me up to first frost. For me, typically beginning of December.
I’ve been making a lot of Blackberry Crisps since I pick a quart a day! My freezer is full! And my neighbours are tired of blackberries. Now that the temps aren’t above 30C, I might start making some jam with the excess fruit.
I’m up to Book 3 of your Julie Collins series (started last month)! I swear I could be Julie! We think alike. We even have the same sayings, like “I pooh-poohed it”. My hubby still laughs at me every time I say that (at least once a week!). I love that he still laughs at my jokes. 🙂
For the last few years, I’ve been slowly making my way through Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series. I just finished Book 7, A Trick of the Light. I like that she has created a fake little town nestled in the Eastern Townships in Quebec (close to where I grew up!). That’s the reason I started reading her series in the first place. Now I’m hooked on her quirky writing style and plot twists .
And I read Jeffrey Archer’s Kane and Abel. I also really enjoy his writing style. All of the books I’ve read from J Archer have 2 characters that grow up on opposite sides of the world. 1 in poverty and the other in the lap of luxury. As adults, their paths cross, and of course, they are adversaries. Most of the book is about how much they hate each other, and their attempts at destroying each other’s successful careers, at the cost of their personal lives. Tragedy leads them to reconciliation at the end of of the book. The writing is amazing! His books are hard to put down!
Take care! Looking forward to see what you’re up to in September!

The last time I bought groceries a few weeks ago though more people were wearing masks, at least.

You can also put names on them and a small hole with ribbon and attach them to gifts. On Halloween you can put them into your candy bowl for the little kids that like little items to hold. There’s nothing like having a glass of good red wine or even better bourbon, sitting by the fire pit – can’t wait!! At this point, I’d be happy if it was warm-ish (not hot) during the day so I can have the top off the Jeep, then cooler in the evenings. Soon, I hope…

We’re empty nesters, so no kids back in school (yay!!) As for tomatoes – I’ve gotten a few, but between the random critters munching on the best ones, and having more plant than tomato, the harvest is rather bleak this year.

I love Lisa Kleypas too! August was the first month since the pandemic started that I have been able to travel and it felt soooo good! I got to escape the smoke we have here in Oregon and found out the sky IS still blue, yay!! I’ll be making a few trips to the coast this month, it’s my favorite time to be at the coast in the PNW. Otherwise, working, reading, and painting the hall bathroom. Good times! 😁

You had a productive month! Love the needle work projects. And the gerbera daisies this year were horrible. I’ve never had problems with them before but this year they didn’t bloom and most of them died. I have some knitting and crochet projects I’m working on and planning on doing some Christmas crafts.

We’re not getting what we’d like from our garden….it’s been so wet the tomatoes are rotting before they even ripen. I have, though, been able to make a few bowls of tomato sauce I froze. The daycare where my grandson goes has had a breakout of RSV & of course, he got it and is home for at least a week. My Granddaughter started first grade this month & it’s a change for her plus she just had to get glasses so she’s getting used to those. Pretty much all is the same with the Covid in our area…numbers are going up & I just stay away from places. Thanks so much for this chance.

I love seeing what you’ve done. You sure were busy. Your needlework is splendid! Makes me want to dig more kits out. I do have some fall craft projects I’m attacking this week. We found some late season peaches last week so we blanched and froze them. Perfect for ice cream and cobblers for later this year.

Well….I kicked off the big 5-0 by breaking my foot 10 days beforehand…sleepwalking. Seriously. I can’t even. My hubby sent me and 5 girlfriends to St Maarten to an all inclusive resort for a week to celebrate my birthday. Luckily, we had swimout suites, so the broken foot didn’t keep me out of the water….my one attempt to the beach was painful and a bad idea. But I still had a fabulous time. Still in the boot until the end of this month, but I am powering through.

I do know how you find the energy to do all you do! LOL. I do good to make it through a night of work 😂. Once it finally starts to cool down here, I plan on going through storage units, and hopefully closing them. A bit of gardening in my little patio area, and finish getting our apartment in some sort of order.. Then I plan on enjoying the cooler weather.

Like your daughter I am an RN so it has been very difficult. I work in a rehab facility and there is so much controversy with the vaccine and it is seriously affecting our staffing to the point that we have to stop admissions so we have enough staff to take care of the patients.
I have 2 daughters in high school, the oldest is a senior this year so it will be very busy. They both play volleyball and the season is underway and the younger is in band which is a very busy season. I try to be as involved as I can so some nights I leave for work at 6:00 am and don’t get home until 9:00pm. Long days but worth it to spend time with them. Thanks for the chance.
