Saturday Six — Songs of summer singalong!

August 15, 2020

I’ve been on a kick recently of listening to music that brings back that feeling of summer when I was a kid. Sleeping late–or getting up early because my mom enrolled me in swimming lessons that started at 7:00 am–eating popsicles, riding my bike around, going to the pool with my friends, weekly trips to the library, playing Barbies for days, building a treehouse…all while listening to my little transistor radio, or spinning 45’s or even LPs on our big stereo record player. My mother was a pop music fan so up until I started listening to heavy metal, she never told me to turn the music down 🙂

I’ve narrowed down my choices to the 6 songs that evoke the best/sharpest memories for me. Sorry about the ads before the vids…

BAND ON THE RUN — Paul McCartney and Wings — 1974 — I’m not a Beatles fan AT ALL but gimme McCartney and Wings all day long. I could’ve made this playlist all 70’s Wings songs….SILLY LOVE SONGS was so close to making this list, as was JET and MY LOVE and LIVE AND LET DIE

LOVE WILL KEEP US TOGETHER — Captain and Tenille — 1975 — we lived in Texas during this time and I LOVED this song. For some reason I thought buying my dad the album was a great birthday gift idea. No surprise I played the hell out of that disc 🙂 and he probably doesn’t even remember this song!

DON’T GO BREAKING MY HEART — Elton John/Kiki Dee — 1976 was a GREAT YEAR for music, I have an extensive playlist from this era and I forced myself to pic my top 3 from 76. I could’ve hat 10 songs form the 70’s Elton John, man, what a talent.

DANCING QUEEN — ABBA — 1976 — Was there anything better than ABBA in the 70’s? I think not!

RICH GIRL — Hall and Oates — 1976 — again I have a H&O greatest hits disc that I love so it was hard to narrow it down to just this song…

UNDERCOVER ANGEL — Alan O’Day — 1977 — I remember so clearly this song being on the American Bandstand “Hit or Miss” in February or March and by summer it was a huge hit. A one-hit wonder, but a great song from that time anyway!

YOU’RE THE ONE THAT I WANT — John Travolta/Olivia Newton John — 1978 — I was obsessed with Grease. I saw it 22 times that summer. If I run across it on TV I cannot help but watch it!

And one weirdly confessional bonus. During the summer this song was popular I went out on a date with a friend of a friend. He called me regularly, and showed up for our date with a dozen roses. Nice guy but there just wasn’t any spark there…know what I mean? So the last time I saw him to break it off in person, he played this song and said it would always remind him of us…which was sort of weird, especially if you listen to the lyrics. But, I can’t help but think of that time (I’ll be honest I don’t even remember the guy’s name) when I was seen as some kind of femme fatale that summer 🙂

This list is amazing and we must be from the same era, because they all bring me that childhood summer vibe as well 📻

Great play list! At the pool every summer I would always hear Baby Hold On To Me by Eddie Money. I think of those childhood summer days at the pool when it comes on still to this day.

well, I’m of an earlier era…but then, I was watching the Monkees when they were first on tv! I do remember some of these very fondly, but never liked the Kiki Dee/Elton John duet. Give me almost anything else by the Great EJ! And now I’m going to have some Abba running in my head for the rest of the evening! I do have to say, that Tubes video is flat weird–and I watched a lot of MTV when it first hit the cable! Would think I already knew weird! Ah well, many great eras out there!

Like yourself I LOVE the seventies (despite being born in 1970, so effectively too young to remember the early seventies Persey). I also remember Grease coming out in 78 this IS one of my all time favourite films ever—unfortunately I was unable to go to the cinema to see it (I was only 8)— but I have got it on DVD & watched it nearly until it’s gone through the tape!.
I can remember my parents going to see Elton live at Watford football grounds and my Dad fell asleep just as the opening bars of ‘Funeral for a friend’ started up! How I honestly don’t think I’ll ever know?

Shoot, I’m in YouTube mode! I just watched/listened to Billy Joel & Bruce Springsteen doing New York State of Mind in concert together back in 2006, now I’m rocking to them doing Freeze Out & Born To Run at the Garden in 2018! Oh wow! I love YouTube!!!!

Well, I got married in 1970 but those songs?? My husband and I danced to them frequently. Especially H&O, they were, and are still to this day, one of his favorite duos. He has most of there songs on his playlist. My brother saw them in concert several months ago and he swears they are just as good now as they were back then. Also Captain and Tennille were right up there for my husband, me not so much. Now I did love Don’t Go Breaking My Heart and Dancing Queen. Man, do those bring back some great memories. Even tho we were married, we partied A LOT. Heck, I was only 19 and he was 23, so we were young enough to act like kids instead of an old married couple.
Thanks for sharing. I’d listened to all of those and just thinking about that time brought back some great memories.

As I’m a bit older than you, I was in high school for all these tunes. I remember them all fondly, especially Elton, always Elton. Seeing him in concert last year was seriously a dream come true, a bucket list item checked off. Grease came out the summer before my senior year, I volunteered every summer for a kid’s program called Ole ( Operation Life Enrichment), we served underprivileged children with school enrichment reading, math, science in the morning and fun field trips in the afternoon. All of us counselors, went to see that movie 25 times that summer. Good memories and it’s one I also watch anytime it comes on.

I grew up listening to all these songs you mentioned! I was always a complete music junky growing up. I remember having the two disc album for Grease….memorized every song. My favorite memory is going to my grandmothers house and using her big console record player. Had to play whatever she had. I remember Neil Diamond’s Forever in Blue Jeans on a 45 very fondly
