Saturday Six!

Six random things about me:

A) I make my bed every day. I can’t stand looking at a messy, unmade bed. My daughters give me crap about this — and they don’t suffer from the same need to make their beds every day, even now as adults. But really, if I spent good money on great looking bedding, why wouldn’t I want to see it all nice and put together?

B) I’m allergic to cinnamon. Totally weird thing, right? I didn’t develop the allergy until after my first pregnancy in my 20’s. Another odd fact? I passed the cinnamon allergy onto daughters one & two but our third daughter is not allergic 😲 However, I’m also allergic to aloe vera  (again, WTF?) and daughters one and two don’t have that allergy but daughter three does. The human body is bizarre, man. And it is HARD to find soap and hand sanitizer and lotion that doesn’t have aloe in it.

C) There are NO white walls anywhere in my house. I love bold colors and I’ve done faux paint styles on walls and even the back of doors.

D) I’m still a huge fan of Barbie dolls. I don’t know why the love of dolls as an adult is some kind of dirty little secret–that we were supposed to outgrow childhood things. Raising three daughters meant I could indulge my love of Barbies–they had every playset I could afford, tons of clothes, GI Joe’s as boyfriends, cars, horses, etc. And I played Barbies with them whenever I could. A few years back I bought a couple of high end Barbies and that kick started me collecting them again. I am OBSESSED with Integrity Toys 12 inch dolls. They are stunningly beautiful, with the coolest clothes I’ve ever seen. I also follow a shit-ton of doll diorama accounts on Instagram. How fun would it be if I did dioramas based on the characters I’ve created? There are such creative people out there and it just fills me with joy to see other adults–not all women either–sharing their love of life in a 1/6th size. On a side note: I honestly believe the reason I have such a great imagination and can create stories like I do is BECAUSE I did it for years and years with my dolls.

E) I had Siamese cats growing up. I was completely a cat person…and I met a man who is deathly allergic to cats–Siamese cats especially. Thus ended my cat ownership. But Mr. James is worth the trade-off, even after 35 years together 😍

F) I couldn’t whistle until I was 13. No idea why I couldn’t. I’d try and try and my little brother would make endless fun of me for not being able to do it, which just pissed me off because of course HE could whistle. Maybe because orthodonics changed the shape of my mouth and jaw, that enabled me to finally learn to whistle a jaunty tune whenever I like.

Tell me an odd fun fact about yourself!

I still make my bed too! My family and friends think I am weird and I think they are weird for not making it. I still can not whistle.

For some reason, I can’t snap the fingers of my right hand but can do it with my left. You’d think my dominant hand would have no problem with finger-snapping.

I can touch my tongue to the tip of my nose.
When I touch my tongue down to my chin I put Jagger to shame.
Number one son can, number two can barely get his tongue to curve upward.

I have to make my bed in the morning…..drives me nuts if it isn’t made. And growing up we always had Siamese cats. My husband of almost 43 years is allergic and used that excuse for a while but I got him some Reactine. He is good and we have had cats for over 25 years.

I hate carrots, the taste, the texture, raw or cooked, but I loved carrot cake, carrot muffins, almost any baked goods made with carrots. I always say the sugar takes the evil out of them!

I can never be on-time for anything, I have to be early. If I arrive on time, then I am late. Drives my children crazy, but it is just how I have to be

I played the violin, and then viola, all through school until my senior year of high school. I was never that good at it, but I did well enough, and enjoyed it. Both my kids choose to take violin of their own accord, and enjoyed it as well

I can’t eat chocolate anything without getting it on my face. It drove my grandmother crazy when I was a child, and even at 50, when I look in a mirror, there it is. Only chocolate though, so it must be I enjoy it so much, I chow down and forget to be neat

I won’t eat cherries and bananas on their own, but have no problem eating them when mixed in with anything else, even together. The texture of both bother me for some reason when it is only it

I truly enjoy both coffee and tea. Flavoured or not, for both.

I learned to whistle at nine months old. It freaked everybody out, me sitting in my high chair whistling away. Also I’m allergic to Benadryl, or at least the active ingredient, which is pretty weird. Luckily I’m not allergic to anything else I can’t easily avoid.

I love your books and obviously your characters!

I drive with both feet. I learned to drive in a standard which required both feet and drove a standard for 10+ years. Driving and automatic I use one foot for the break and one for the gas. I tried using one foot and almost had an accident, so two footed it is.

I have one of those awful minds which remember the most obsure references: as a result – no-one allows me in a quiz-team (bc I know so much!)

Oh, and I can spell like a dictionary – don’t know why, but I’m good at spelling 🙂

I can bend three toes on my left foot while keeping the first two straight. My odd talent.
And I too am allergic to aloe vera but not the gel in the leaves of the actual plant.
I’m super clumsy, walking into walls and tripping on my feet, but can catch things before they hit the floor when I knock them over or bobble them.

I’m the oldest in a family of 7. All the years I lived at home I was the dishwasher. I HATE WASHING DISHES to this day! I also can’t stand to see them dirty in the sink. Catch-22. So from the time I left home I’ve NEVER had an apartment or house that didn’t have a dishwasher. When my husband and I would house hunt, if it didn’t have a dishwasher it was a deal breaker.

You are right about allergies in a family! I’m allergic to cats, mold and pollen. My son is allergic to cats, dogs and horses, and his son (age 2) is truly allergic to eggs. My allergy is a bother, but for my grandson, they carry an Epi-pen and read food labels very, very diligently.

I cheat on bed making. What’s the fun of a duvet if you tuck it in? So I straighten the sheets and given that down comforter a good shake. Voila! Bed is made. I was a candy striper in high school, and learned to make hospital corners, but I’m fine with easy.

I got my driver’s license a few months after my 30th birthday.
I was scared of driving for years and when all my friends started taking driving lessons in high school I couldn’t bring myself to do it.
For so many years everyone I know kept telling I need to get my driver’s license and they just couldn’t understand my fear of driving.

Rough Riders was my first entry into Romance. I never cared for it, in my brain it was my mother’s genre. I did not understand the reference to Buttercup / Wuv Tru Wuv and I had to Google it. I FINALLY streamed Princess Bride about a week ago- such a great movie! So thank you for opening my eyes to a whole new world!!
